  • Magic Jack

I stay up way to late and end up seeing this infomercial for magicJack I have to admit that this sounds like it can save money if you travel outside the US but you will need to bring your laptop and have an Internet connection. Any one buy this yet?

No, but they are advertising it enough on our TV here. It sounds interesting, Frank. Some countries are completely free but not to my native country.

Sounds like a good deal to me. Maybe worth giving it a try since the cost is so reasonable.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Don't have one myself so no first hand knowledge, but, talked to someone the other day who has one and they say it actually worked pretty good.

            I Have one

It works fine, the only problem I have with it is up here in the boonies, the closest city they have telephone #'s for is almost 100 south. It doesn't matter on outbound calls, but if somebody local wants to call me it's long distance.

You have been up late too BF. I have seen the commercials for months now and have been wondering the same thing.

Our friends use it at home and their office, and it saves them a fortune as they own a company in China and commute back and forth. They love it!

How does international calling work with MagicJack? In their internet website, it says free calling in USA and Canada.

MagicJack - Tried it this summer

I tried it this summer in an attempt to see if it would be good to eliminate our main land line. It worked OK but we always felt like we were in a tunnelp or something like it.

You could also not port your current number over. For our intended purpose, it was not suitable.

For travel on the other hand, I think it would be a good investment. It is real small and easy to use if you have internet access.

BF, if you get it, let me know what you think. I have a thread out here or over yonder asking the same question...

It could never replace my home phone so thats out now for travel it sounds good but it I am in the USA my cell is a local call. If I travel out of the USA then it would be useful as long as you have free Internet problem is I rarely bring my lap top when I travel outside the US. I do not think I can make enough use of it to buy it.

                        Frank

I too watched it just before your OP and asked my DH who is in IT if we should do this and elimate our landline.

Here is what his research came up with:

Phone # is not portable-phone #'s 1 million were bought by MJ all over the US not necessarily in your zone so for others that call you it could be a long distance call
No human phone support only email
Must keep your computer on all the time-uses computer resources so it slows down the speed
                        Pop up ads galore
Magic Jack is owned by Dan Borislow founder/ inventor, CEO Don Burns YMAX Communication Corp
Think about what happened to Vonage
                        Tracks all inbound/outbound calls
                        Not registered with the BBB
                        Mixed results for international calling

                        Hope this helps

We used our MagicJack in Aruba a few weeks ago at The Aruban. The reception was fair to poor, some calls were clearer than others. Skype worked much better to keep in touch with family in the states.
