  • I'm really angry!!!!

I don't know where this post belongs and frankly I don't care. I took an hour to respond to a post this morning only to lose the thing when the site insisted that I wasn't logged on. I was. It is the second time that this has happened.

This post was important to me. Wasting my time is not something that I like to do. I don't know what the problem was. I really don't care. I'm not looking for a resolution. I'm just letting the members know, in future, if my responses are very brief, there is a reason.

I have no idea what the fix with this is either... I had not seen this on my computers as I have four computers (three running Windows XP and a fourth on Windows 2000). With three of my computers I seem to have no problems with getting logged out but yet on the fourth I do have this issue...

I don't think it is a forum problem per say as much as a problem with a cookie setting... I am aware of the problem but the cookie domain is unique and there is no set timeout on the system...

Sorry you lost your long post and just be glad you don't type as slow as as he can spend an hour to type what I just typed here

I wish I had a better answer but I just don't at this time...

I feel your pain. Computer gremilins, I think. They hide, allow the minor work to pass, then spring when we do something time consuming. Little buggers.

In the computer world in general, I have learend that anything that takes any kind of time to do is worth saving, often. I use Word to compose my messages, which if it was that important or time consuming, would easily allow me to Save.
The only problem with free speech is people using it.

        A trick to try

Won't help for that post but when that happens to me - quite often on this BBS - I simply login again then use the back button on my browser until I get back to the post I had created and post it. Its convoluted but it has worked for me.

One thing that I do is copy the post before I hit submit. This way if it is lost you can just repaste it. I have also heard of people first typing it on word then copying it over here.

This happens to me on another board I frequent.

So I almost always - highlight and copy - what I have just finished typing and this way if i hit the button and it doesn't post...I just go back, re-enter it and try again....don't have to re-type.

I crossed over Frank here but I see we are doing the same thing....

I have lost posts in the past, and have always assumed that I forgot to hit the "submit reply."

I probably did forget to hit "submit reply", but somehow it makes me feel better thinking it was the computer's fault.....

I have the same problem ~~ don't know why it happens but it does ~~ I can read all the messages I want to but if I go & add my (long) reply I usually am logged-off before I can senf the message. After that happen ~~ I just copy the reply message before sendin ~~ This is the only site that does this to me ~~ I think Tug does as well but I don't remember any more as I don't do any more Tug postin's ~~

I had posted on the developers site asking for what advise I could give as well as any advise where I might update my settings and I got the following....

First off, advise your users to check 'Remember Me' when logging in.
If that doesn't help, then check if they're logging in via vBulletin itself or via a third-party software/page. It could be that this isn't entering the sessions into the database correctly.
Now, you are entering from vBulletin as it is the only login system on the site... everything I have added ges into vB! I know I have the "Remember Me" checked so perhaps that is why I have less of an issue?

I has happened to me a few times here. I am clearly logged in and when I hit submit, it insists I am not logged in.

I just go on to another site, assuming that my visit here was not meant. I believe that computers sometimes do whatever they want, things computer experts don't really understand.

It also takes pages a long time to load here, especially the first one after I log in.

When I tried to submit and I got the you're not logged in message, I attempted to email my post page to me. I was able to get back to it. But, I was unable to email the page to me. The comment section was blank in the page portion. I could get back to the completed post. I tried again to submit my post. No go. When I complied with the instruction to log in, my post disappeared.

I was logged in. At the top of the page where I wrote my comments, my name was written twice, just as it is right now.

I don't copy or paste. I barely type and email.

I might not have been so angry but I'm rushing around to pack for a trip. I had very little time to attempt this post. It was really important to me. The post was long. I make a lot of errors so it really did take me a hour to write. Thanks for your suggestions, but, due to lack of time, case closed.

Kathleen, It may have showed that you were logged in when you first started writing but if you took so long to reply and did not have the check in the box for remember me. Then the system may have logged you out. Also as Ken mentioned be sure your security cookies are not to secure as that will log you out no matter if the check is in the box or not.

Kathleen, this happens to me all the time and I have learned to "copy" the text before I hit the "send" button so I still have it just in case. You most likely used your back page button and all your text is gone but if you would have just filled out your user name and pw again, the message would still be there.

I have to log in each time too and don't know why as I have a check mark in the little box and have complained about it before but losing a long post is upsetting.

I had to fill in my user name and pw just now again! I also lose what I typed when I get an announcement of a private message coming in but I turned off this feature.

                            Its pretty simple..
just highlight your text, right click on it. clock the copy button. Then if you lose it sometime in the future, you right click and paste it back in the reply window.

                              Kathleen,

If your typing skills are as limited as you suggest I'm not surprised you blew your stack when it all disappeared without trace. Even those of us who are decent typists will have exited Word or another application without saving, despite all the warnings the system gives us, so we can sympathise.
The suggestions made to compose in Word or even Notepad and then copy and paste are good ones. Any system can and will go wrong from time to time so a fallback position is always good to have.
