Yellowstone Earthquakes Raise Fears

This could be a little notice that you better not put off going. Might stay calm for another 70,000 years, but you never know how long it will be accessible.

From the articles I have read, if the Big One blows under Yellowstone, we are pretty much toast here (a few hundred miles away in Colorado -- but still in the "blast" zone). In fact, it would be a global event changing the climate for several years. I think worrying about where to vacation would not be an issue...

Yellowstone is the most violently eruptive active volcano known on earth. The entire Snake River Plain across southern Idaho is the gash in the earths crust created by the volcano as the north American tectonic plate has moved across the hot spot that is the volcano's source.

Yellowstone could be a "super volcano" and should it erupt it would cause catastrophic damage including global climate change.

IIRC - The average time between major eruptions of Yellowstone is about 300,000 years. It has been about 300,000 years since it's last major eruption.

We have an exchange to Island Park in August this year to visit Yellowstone, maybe we should cancel

Most likely it will not blow this year or even in your lifetime! San Francisco has had rumblings for some time now. The west coast could drop away, I don't see everyone bailing out of that area.

Think of all the persons living around volcanoes. You don't see them moving or running. How many go to the island of Hawaii and walk over the lava to get a glimpse of the red stuff sliding into the sea?

Those doing the famous drive in Glacier NP could plunge over the edge. I don't think they should cancel their plans because of that possibility.

Everyone wanting to see, should go do as you please. Enjoy your vacation and visit all you can.

Went in 2008

We went to Yellowstone in 08 and I'm so glad we did. It was one place I wanted to go all my life and if I hadn't gone I'd still be wishing.
It is one of the sights I feel everyone should have the chance to see and knowing now how beautiful it is nothing would stop me. Sort of like California or Hawaii with either earthquakes or volcanoes but if that stopped you then you might just go find a cave to live in. Better make sure it is a safe cave though.

I think we'll take the chance and keep our exchanges into both Yellowstone and Glacier this July. Maybe we'll bring some marshmallows to toast if she blows!
