Most And Least Expensive U.S. Cities For Homeowners - Forbes.com Of course, this isn't the whole C.O.L. picture here.

Forbes apparently doesn't realize that Honolulu is a USA city ?

NY is 75% more expensive than Boise. My commute is 10min door to door -- 3 stop signs and 1 light, and 2 of those stop signs are encountered getting out of my subdivision. Our property taxes are around 1.5%, not sure exactly. We have cheap electricity due to hydroelectric generation, and where I live we have essentially free unlimited pressurized irrigation water for our yards. A newer 3BR, 2BA 2000sf house in a nice neighborhood would be about $250-$325K here, depending on location. It's a great place, but it's definitely not for everybody.

Try Lahina, HI and Naples, FL

When we were on Maui last month we paid over $5.00 for 1 doz. of eggs and over $9.00 for a gal of milk. When we got back to Brookfield, we paid $1.65 for 1 doz. of eggs and $2.50 for a gal. of milk.

Fern -DH has the same commute as you did. It takes him 3hrs RT when there are no accidents or snow storms. It can take another 1-2 hours more.

I drive 2.5 hours a day RT myself and I do not want to do much on weekends because I am so tired from the weekly commute and long day but most colleges are in the greater Boston area not south of Boston.

When the time comes to relocate to HHI we want less than 30 minutes to commute. It just sucks up too much energy and life.

Angela rents in Boston are ridiculous since there are so many colleges. That's a pretty expensive sink for $500+.
