  • Time to retire the grill-need replacement ideas

    After about 7 years, I am weighing the problems of the grill and the cost to repair vs. going out and buying a new grill.

    I have a Holland Tradition grill. Problems are:
    Igniter needs to be replaced.
    Gas line needs to be replaced.
    Side shelf panel is breaking and needs to be replaced.
    Burner still works, but is rusted badly.
    Same for the burner heating plate above the burner.
    There is no way to add smoke to this, the smoke tray is there, but does not work.
    Sure, for $30-50, I could replace the igniter and gas line, but will still have an old grill with a cracking side shelf.

    Anyone knowing the Holland grills, they are really outdoor ovens. All indirect heat, no searing the steak with this grill. Good for chicken or pork loin.

    I would like the option of direct heat and/or indirect heat for cooking.
    I don’t need a side burner.
    I want a good cooking grill that is easy to clean and will last more than 4 seasons like the grill before the Holland did.
    So if I was to replace this, what suggestions do you have?

    A Weber. We've had this thread before and I think almost everybody loves their Webers. You can get replacement parts from the company forever and they really hold up. Our original Weber (almost the bottom of the line) is about eight or nine years old now--we've replaced a few things, but basically it's been tootling along just fine. A few years ago we bought an "extra" on craigslist to cannibalize one part and then DH fixed the extra up, so we now have two Webers.

    People love the Big Green Egg, but that's more of a lifestyle choice than a grill!

        Definately Weber. Mine is going into it's 13th summer.

        Of course they are now owned by Ducane but I still believe you'll get a quality product.

          I didn't know Ducane owned Weber.

          Okay, what features are worth getting. There are some cheap grills that cook poorly with flame ups and you have to sit and watch. That isn't me. I want good food, flavors from the grilling and don't want to sit with a spray bottle to put out flames.

          I think it would have to be at least the Genesis level. Yes No

              I think ours is the Genesis Silver Plus or Silver B or something like that. It has three burners. No problems with flame-ups or anything like that, it cooks very evenly and nicely.

              The one thing I would like is more power. If I needed a new one, I would get one that pumps out more BTUs so I could get an even more defined char on the steaks.

              I just remembered we needed replacement grills a few years back and splurged on the cast iron ones rather than the steel ones. The cast iron is MUCH better!

                We have a Weber as well & its almost three years old, we like it, its a small grill but plenty of space for grilling, there is only three of us here at the house, my wife, me & our Daughter. We also bought the stand that fits the grill as well as the cover, I cook everything on the grill all year long; fish, steak, sausage, burgers, dogs, corn-on-the-cob, asparagus, etc. Can't remember the cost exactly but it was over two hundred dollars.

                Invest in these Weber's as they are great for grilling! Purchasing a model depends on what you like to grill, size & cleaning.

                    Another vote for Weber /Genesis.
                    Ours has to be at least 20 years old, probably more as we have been in this house for 29 years and I can't remember another grill . Have replaced the grill bars once as well as the part you actually place the food on, but the basic unit is fabulous and problem free.
                    (Forget the electric ignition, everyone I know says it works for about a year and then you need to use a match, mine included. )

                      Another vote for Weber. I have a Genesis Gold B (IIRC) and it's about 5 years old. No problems thus far. My grill has stainless burner, flavorizer bars and grates. My only complaint with it would be that they still haven't completely nailed the uneven heat across the surface of the grill, relative to the location of the gas supply. Sometimes this nuance turns out to be a nice feature, however, when trying to even out the doneness of meats of varied thickness.

                        I thought it was the other way around? I thought Weber bought Ducane?

                          Unfortunately we had this problem too. But they did last longer than a year--maybe four years? We need a new one. It's not an expensive part.

                            I saw a show on TV that claims you have more cancer producing carcinogens from charred meat. It sure tastes good though.

                              I'm sure that's true. My mother was screaming at my father about that back in the 1970s! Good thing my Weber isn't truly powerful....
