I saw a comedian who said swallowing saliva may cause cancer, but only if swallowed in small amounts over a long period of time.

I think the bottom line on this is that everything may have its upside or downside. Eating red meat is bad for my cholesterol, so I reduce my eating it. Maybe vegetarian is the way to go, but I am not going to do that.

There have been some good replies to this thread, and I guess I should be looking for a sale on a new Weber Grill.

I have to admit, I thought I would have had stronger guy response of 'you need three burners and rotisserie and a light to allow you to grill after sunset' and on like that. But, I am surprised to say that I got a lot more input from women than I expect. My wife doesn't go near the grill. I am glad to know my house maybe the exception rather than the rule of women don't grill.

My husband had never used the grill until I trashed my ankle last summer...

I have used both the 2 burner (Laguna Surf) and 3 burner (mine) version of the Weber Genesis. I prefer the 3 burner version for the indirect cooking as I have been known to use my grill as an oven on occasion. Rotisserie option definately a must have. I don't care for side burners but that's just me.

As opposed to others on this thread my electronic ignitor has never not worked.

Let us know what you end up with Don.

PS Paul, It may be that it was the other way around. Weber buying Ducane. In the end it amounts to the same thing.

I very much like the idea of indirect cooking. I have made pizza on my Holland grill, and once even a cake. One problem with the Holland is that there is no temperature control. You turn it on and that is the temperature. The plus of it is that it does a nice job with pork roast and whole chicken (beer can chicken).

But if I have to bring out my camping grill for steaks and burgers, it gets to be more work with tank change over and finding a place to set the grill.

I need a good grill for high heat for steaks, med heat for chicken and pork and somewhere in between for pizza.

I am thinking the genesis 310 looks about right for my needs. I will check them out soon.

And the Weber/Ducane. I had an opinion that Ducane was a higher quality grill, maybe I was wrong on that. It makes me think of Black and Decker owning DeWalt and I think I have heard they even own Porter Cable. Low grade company owning upper line names. Just makes me think those quality tools will be loosing value as B&D takes the quality to make profit.

If anyone is still looking, it looks like there's going to be a grill on Amazon's Lightning Deals at 10:00 Pacific Time. I don't know what it is, b/c they just give you a clue, but it sounds like a grill. See if this link gets you there.

I have forsaken the big chrome gas grill for the no-frills, non-gas, char bricquette style Weber and love it.
Just have to plan a tad more to have it lit correctly.
              Very happy with it.

                Results of my grill story.

I went to Menards to buy a new gas line and igniter set with plans to rebuild the old Holland. I looked at their grills on display, some already at close out prices. One stainless steel model with 4 burners caught my eye and my desires, but I was going to rebuild mine so that would need to wait until next year.

Well, I got home, replaced the gas line, then started to strip the grill apart for a very good cleaning. Oh No. It looked like my old 1965 Ford station wagon (how is that for a first car). It was badly rusted and really in poor shape. Rusted chunks of metal lay on the bottom with little future showing for the old grill. Oh well, going to hold off until next year. I finished cleaning it and put it back together.

Sunday paper comes out, and there is that shiny grill on sale at another store. Well…I take that ad, (and my poor wife who just wanted to stay home) and we head off to the store where I saw it the day before. I figure they will match or even drop it below their competitor’s price. Wife checked it out and gave approval. Menards did price match and we drove into the storage area to pick it up. It weighs more than I do, so we found help getting it in. Okay, it is in, but what is going to happen when I get home?

So I am driving around for 4 days with a grill in big box in the back of my Vue because I can’t get it out. Thursday, Kim (wife) is late with school stuff, so I have the garage to do the assembly. I ripped the box open. The grill parts came out of the box in smaller boxes. I start looking at this pile of parts and figure I am going to have problems moving it from the garage to the patio, so the pieces go into my garden wagon and to the back yard for assembly. Now in Minnesota, we don’t have stable temperatures. Wednesday, it was in the 60s, it was 85 and very windy Thursday as I was assembling the grill. By Saturday it was in the 50s. By now I am thinking we had our one day of summer and if this temperature trend continues, I am going to have to put the grill away for the winter.

With great difficulty, I fought the wind and the heat and doing the job of two people, and in about 2-1/2 hours, I got the grill assembled. And it works great. From outdoor temp to 500 degrees in about 5 minutes. The old Holland would take 20 minutes to get to 400 degrees.

I now own an Aussie Uluru Elite 4 burner with side burner grill. Grill is working great and my wife has approved of the last cook out. I have to relearn how to use a gas grill since the Holland was a single burner with one setting and I now have 4 burners with full adjustment, but I accept the challenge.

Nice story.....grilling in MN sure is more challenging than grilling in CA.

We grill all year round here. We are now building a BBQ island/bar in our backyard and enjoyed this thread.

It is amazing the range of grills available and the price extremes.

                  Thanks.

You have one of the best grills now! I sold over 600 when I was working.
The burner is guaranteed for life along with the ss cooking grid.
The heat plate will show rust but because it is so thick it is nothing to worry about. You do need to clean out the rust out of the burner ( this is normal ) to insure the correct amount to air to fuel ratio. Take the top apart from the bottom and make sure the screen underneath is clear.
I can help you with the smoking issue too. Forget the chip drawer on the front and place a replacement chip tray in the back corner just under the cooking grid. They are ava. from Holland. DO NOT wet the chips!
You always can light your grill with a long lighter and do not have to replace the srtarter. Replacement starters should be around $17. It is a good thing to do if you are going to take the burner out because you will all ready have it apart.
You can purchase shelves or a shelf and the chip tray direct from the Holland web site.
I only cook on a Holland, have for over 10 years now. Nothing ever catches on fire and everything comes out so moist !!!! Big hunks of meat are to die for. Whole chickens, turkeys, roasts whole salmon etc. are super and you never have to open the lid, it cooks by time based on weight.
You can PM me for any other help.
                    Have a great time cooking,

                    Bing
Keep what you have, it is a super grill !!!!!

Bing, Not sure if you were commenting on my post, but I have dumped my Holland and am not looking back.

I have done things with my new grill that I never could with the Holland. Almost every time I come in the house with a plate of food, I tell my wife how much I love my new Aussie grill.

Nope, the Holland is dead to me. Long live the Aussie.

BTW-The Holland is still sitting on the patio taking up space. If you know anyone in the area that wants it for $25 (for the parts I put in before giving up on it), they can take it off my hands.

You should get $100 for it. I used to buy them, fix them up and resell them for 300 to 400 $. I would love to have it.

                          Weber

After numerous grills we finally bought a Weber. Best we've had.
