We are starting to look at going to Hawaii in October 2011. There will be five of us - 3 from MN and 2 from TN. We are looking to break up the flight by spending a day each way on the west coast. Historically which west coast cities have the best flights and prices to Hawaii? We will probably spend a week on Hawaii and a week on Ohau.

When we are checking prices we normally see that Portland and Seatlle have the best prices. We normally do not use them because of the cost getting there from northern California.
I just picked a date at random for a one week roundtrip to Oahu from the west coast. I picked Oct 7, 2009 to Oct 14, 2009:
Portland - Honolulu $338
San Jose - - Honolulu $356
San Francisco - Honolulu $356
Seattle - Honolulu $362
Sacramento - Honolulu $380
Oakland - Honolulu $395
Los Angeles - Honolulu $408
San Diego - Honolulu $514
Those are price without fees of approx another $27 but gives an idea. I guess my whole point is don't just focus on California, Portland and Seattle may be viable alternatives depending on where one comes from.David

Need to add hotel and transportation cost.
I use frequent fly and break in SF for 4 days since that is the only route we can find from Frequent Fly. Take similar route as yours, arrive at Kauai and leave from Honolulu.
All trip was covered by point TS. But the car rental still add up. Next time, I may consider stay a whole week since the rental car cost is the same as 4 days. Or just take the ground transportation if I only have 2 people travel.

We live in Nor Cal and usually find all of the cheapest airfares out of the Bay Area (San Jose, Oakland, or San Fran) or LA (usually LAX, but sometimes SNA or ONT). My father has on more than one occasion made the 6 hour drive to LA to get a really great fare out of LAX. And the further south on the West Coast you fly into, the shorter your flight to HI will be.

We stopped in SF for two nights on the way to Kona from PHL once. We had a great time there. Booked hotels on priceline and got a free shuttle ride from the airport to the hotel. The flights were all part of one multi-leg reservation that was the same price as flying straight through on one day.
