That's what friends are for. We can go through this process together and try to keep each other from making bad choices or decisions.
BTW Sears was going to go over my siding not tear it off. Hendo says that's not the right way to do it unless you have clapboard. My cedar shingles are too "soft" to hold everything up and we will also find out if carpenter ants or termites have been at the house. ( Lord I sure hope not!)Lawren

If you like the cedar shake look without the fuss there is a new product out made by Mastic/Alcoa looks JUST LIKE THEM but vinyl and...NO SEAMS!

The final bid
well yesterday we got bid #3.
They came in a bit higher for all the siding / insulation work at $17,700 but came down to match the $14,800 we had received from the 2nd bidder.
They also will use 16 foot pieces .046 thickness and do all the trim work, strip the house, insulate with 3/4 inch R3.8 foam, soffits, facia, gutters & leaders and shutters.
Their windows are exorbinantly priced between $550 and $585 for simple double hung windows but they are triple paned....I have some window research to do now.
Avery this third company only has 3 ( resolved ) Better Business complaints in the last 36 months and they do have offices on Long Island. in Seaford 516-826-9800 and Deer Park 516-667-8600. You may want to give them a call as we would use them if the "local" guy wasn't as good and did so much here. Besides the fact that I believe in supporting local merchants if they match up well in an apples to apples comparison.
They are Tri-State Window Factory Corp and have been in business since 1969.

Lawren,
THANK YOU for keeping in mind, I am printing this, too. As soon as I settle on kitchen cabinets I am moving on to siding. The cabinets take so long for delivery, I figure I need to get that done first, then should have time to get everything else in place. This place sounds like a good possibility, you are saving me a lot of work!!

The quotes are good for 3 months BTW.
and TD Bank North is offering 6.24 ( 5.99 if you auto-pay thru an account you have with them ) fixed rate on 5 year Home Equity Loans. No origination fees on primary homes and after 3 years you can pre-pay it with no penalty. https://esecure.tdbanknorth.com/home...nitedbank.html
Not bad when the prime rate is at 8%.
Yes I finally got my husband to agree thanks to my CPA.Lawren

My daughter lives in an area where vinyl siding is not permitted but the Hardy Plank siding is. She had that installed and I can't remember the price but at the time I thought it was reasonable. You can buy it in a color or just have it primed and paint it yourself. It's all the same price. She had it primed and hired someone to do the painting because she wanted a certain color.
I thought that sounded like defeating the purpose but it's supposed to hold paint really well. This was about three years ago and it looks great.

Finally
Contracts are signed and, after feeling like this process has been going on forever, work is to begin on JUNE 26th!
I have to order my new outdoor lamps and get the electrician to come next week and put the outdoor outlets in ( costs less as he doesn't have to worry about looks ) but I am so looking forward to my new house!

Things are not going well getting our storm damage repaired. Because of all the construction around Branson there is a shortage of trades people, and the storms just made it worse.
I have called every contractor in the phone book or local papers, plus those referred by local insurance companies, and only three have come out to look. Only one of them has submitted a bid. It was just for the roof on the house and is $1400 higher than we have been adjusted.
I've spent most of several days the last month on this, but it seems to be like everything else, a hassle.
If all else fails, I have a union crew in Springfield lined up to come down on a weekend off and do the work. Friends of ours, so not at union wages, but we don't want to short them either.RCI Member Since 24-Aug-1989/150-plus Exchanges***THE TIMESHARE GRIM REAPER~~~Exchanging/Searching/SW Florida/MO/AR/IA/Consumer Advocacy/Estate Planning/Sports/Boating/Fishing/Golf/Lake-living/Retirement****Sometimes ya just gotta be a dick

My friend just bought a house in town that has aluminum siding, and they are in the process of pulling it off and replacing it with wood shingles, which they will then just seal without staining. I wonder if this is the cheapest way to go maintenance-wise? The wood does look nicer than the aluminum did (although, I didn't even know the former was aluminum...looked like painted wood to me...but I'm not that discerning when it comes to this stuff). My friend told me that non-wood siding detracts from resale value?

I ran into a local contractor at the post office. He asked how our roof replacement is going. One thing led to another and he was just out to bid our repairs. He found a lot of stuff the insurance adjustor didn't.
I know how much difference when we get his bid.

Busy, busy
Just a quick note so you will know why I haven't been around to much.
Monday it rained so nothing was done by the contractors but the electrician installed the outdoor outlets..
Tuesday my house was completely stripped down to her "unmentionables".
Wednesday my house was blue. 85% covered in new Dow Styrofoam insulation.
Thursday all the new windows were installed, the rest of the insulation and about 25% of the siding.
I'm running around buying new lamps, new doorbells, new mailbox. Custom mixing paint for the front door, painting wood trim around my tile house number sign.
I have a 12 inch round HOLE in my kitchen behind the cooktop that I wasn't expecting so now I have to do a backsplash that I wasn't really planning for.
Emergency call to alarm company to re-install one room because of a window replacement. Highway robbery at $162. Time to investigate a new alarm company...
When I can get my son off the desktop I'll share some pictures. I take some each day so we will remember what we had and how wonderful it will come out in the end.
The improvement in insulation and windows was noticeable last night as we woke this morning to a cool house, although the air was lowered, and not much humidity crept in.
I'm loving the new look!Lawren
