    Lawren,

Since I am going to be a few months behind you, I am glad you have a in your post!

Glad it is going well, backsplash surprise aside (that can be a fun project, right?)

      ok, stupid question:

If I replace the windows (don't want to, but probably need to), do I have to repaint inside the affected rooms?

Monday it rained so nothing was done by the contractors but the electrician installed the outdoor outlets..

Tuesday my house was completely stripped down to her "unmentionables".

Wednesday my house was blue. 85% covered in new Dow Styrofoam insulation.

Thursday all the new windows were installed, the rest of the insulation and about 25% of the siding.

I'm running around buying new lamps, new doorbells, new mailbox. Custom mixing paint for the front door, painting wood trim around my tile house number sign.

I have a 12 inch round HOLE in my kitchen behind the cooktop that I wasn't expecting so now I have to do a backsplash that I wasn't really planning for.

Emergency call to alarm company to re-install one room because of a window replacement. Highway robbery at $162. Time to investigate a new alarm company...

When I can get my son off the desktop I'll share some pictures. I take some each day so we will remember what we had and how wonderful it will come out in the end.

The improvement in insulation and windows was noticeable last night as we woke this morning to a cool house, although the air was lowered, and not much humidity crept in.
        I'm loving the new look!
From reading this it seems to all work out well because it is a big job and having less noise and less heat or cold coming in will be a big improvement too. Show us your pictures.

          Avery,

Repeat after me "There is no such thing as a stupid question."

As a former project manager I have been a little disturbed by things I've missed in my "process". I NEVER should have missed the alarm issue. However, as this is my very first residing job, I have to forgive myself for not knowing that the entrance cable for the electric is the owners responsibility.

I always lived in city apartments/co-ops and it never even dawned on me that I would have to pay to fix/replace that. Back out comes the electrician. I am glad that we built 10% fat into the loan for the "what ifs".

This is something that you would never notice given the condition of the garage but sticks out like a sore thumb next to the brand new siding.

As for repainting inside after window replacement. I do have to "touch-up" one frame of the eleven. The rest are still fine.

OK I tried to load them to this thread and the photo server with no luck. I have uploaded to snapfish and hope you all can get in there. Let me know if the link doesn't work. I may have to send it by e-mail.

PS: If you see those number tiles in the pre-stripped house, they came from the Pottery Shack in Laguna Beach 10 or 11 years ago. I have stripped the frame and painted it to match the shutters.

It is very much like living in a fishbowl though. Three guys show up at 8AM and don't leave until 7PM. They work like mules around here but there is hardly any privacy. Thank goodness DS and I are off to work from 9AM until 2PM 4 out of 6 days or I'd go nuts.

              We're still waiting for bids.

Three of the nine houses on the point already have new roofs.

Well I had an appointment with them this morning. They called yesterday to confirm the appointment to meet with me "and my husband." When I reiterated it would only be with me, they told me their policy was to meet with both spouses. Sounds like a timeshare presentation, no? Anyway, I cancelled the appointment, I will not do business with a company that operates that way.

So back to the yellow pages, though I may just let the contractor doing the kitchen do it to save some aggravation.

Sheesh....I don't blame you. I would have done the exact same thing. Don't they realize that we are more than capable of spending our husband's money. With or without them present....

Speaking on behalf of husbands, or at least me, I just as soon as sic my wife on these guys without me being there. She knows what she wants; I don't

Two of the companies I had in for bids INSISTED on us both being here. The explanation was that it is a major change and they need both to sign off that they agree.

The third company, which we eventually went with, met with me and gave the estimate. We both went down to sign the contracts, colors, etc.

Not that I agree with the 2 companies but I can understand their point.

I remember many years ago when I was a single mother and was doing a major renovation of my kitchen, I called a contractor and spent 45 minutes trying to explain what I didn't want in the kitchen. The contractor spent 45 minutes telling me I had to do it his way (it was that metal piece between the backsplash and the counter top..ugh)...until my soon to be husband showed up and re-iterated what I wanted.(took 2 minutes)
The contractor had a change of heart and all of a sudden could do it my way!!

                          He didn't get the job!

Glad you found a contractor that was willing to work with you!

It's one thing when a contract is being signed. Then I would agree, and expect to have my husband there, and both signatures on the contract....but for an estimate? I think that's going overboard....

If my husband had to be present for every estimate I got when I did major repairs to my home, nothing would ever have gotten done.

Well, I think the policy is based on the premise that they don't want to 'waste their time' talking to only one spouse. But I wonder how many men are required to have their wives present...

I was not asked "if" I was married. It was assumed, and the appt was made for "Mr and Mrs". This blatant disregard of single women or women in committed relationships living with people other than a 'husband' is just plain insensitive, archaic, heterosexist, ok I'll stop now.

When we bought this house, I put the bid in before my husband even saw it... He does NOT want or need to be involved in the renovations, and I shouldn't have to explain that to anyone on the telephone.

Lawren, I don't mean to sound ungrateful for the recommendation; you've given me a lot of info that I will use to select the siding and make sure that I get the right things done (like insulation). So, thank you again for all that!!

I gave up trying to be the nice guy, waiting for bids that are relatively close to the insurance company's figures. I also gave up trying to get bids for all of our damage at this time. All we want to do is get the roof done now.

The three bids I sent in range from $1200 to $2200 higher than the insurance company has given us, just for the roof. I sent them in last week.

Jenny got impatient and called yesterday. She was told our claim was transferred to another rep. Each time that happens it goes to the bottom of the pile. On top of that he is away at meetings this week.

That really POed her so I had to call our agent. He called the claims manager and then called us back. We are in the que, and it may be two weeks before we hear anything.

Then the claims rep called this morning to let us know he has our file and will get to it when he gets to it, maybe next week. We talked a bit and he said our figures are not out of line.

If our figures are not out of line, why didn't their adjustor use the right figures three months ago!!!???

Five of our neighbors have now had roofs replaced in the time we have been messing with this.

Wait until we get to the aluminum roof over our rear screen roof, since the price of aluminum has (sorry) gone through the roof!
