  • Computer Problem: Virus Notification

Received a Symantec Antivirus notification which states that a virus was found on my computer, Trojan Horse. Clean failed. Quarantine failed. Access denied. Never received anything like this before. Keeps popping up on my screen although I am able to use all functions on my computer. Is this something I can try to fix with my limited skills? Or do I need to call in an expert? Or is my computer doomed? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Charlie

Try going to: Windows Live OneCare safety scanner: Free online tool for PC health and safety
and run the safety scanner. There is information there also for many computer problems. Dump symantec and use avg.free- download at Grisoft.com

      Charlie,

Is the message being generated by Symantec Antivirus or by something called 'Anti Virus Pro'? If the latter then you have got a fairly unpleasant bit of Malware on your system. It can be removed and there are instructions on the web to do so. Use 'Anti Virus Pro' as the search string in Google.

It could be this as Keith says or unfortunately it could be one of several other maleware processes.
For many of these the regular anti-virus products don't get rid of them (ie Norton, McAfee, etc)
There are a few other products that are free that can usually get rid of most anything. Malewarebyte and Superantispyware are two of them that can be gotten for free. Just do a search on either of these and follow directions for downloading and running.
You can also try using your System Restore if you have it set to create restore points. Even tho this isn't very sophisticated it sometimes works. You can do a restore back to a point before you started having a problem and it will restore registry settings, etc. The only problem here is if you have installed anything in between there it is gone.

              It doesn't work that way

The bigger problem is that the more sophisticated viruses/malwares/spywares hide in System Restore and use it to reinfect your PC as fast as you "remove" them.

Step one in actually beating them has to be Turn Off System Restore.

Another great idea (??) from Microsoft gone bad as it is too open to malicious use.

                http://www.timeshareforums.com/forum...ive-virus.html

I know Tony suggested I scan with something other than AVG, but I did scan with it and it detected no threats.

And, so far DW's LT is still doing fine.
