  • HP Officejet All in One printer/fax - need help

I just purchased a printer fax scanner copier HP Officejet J3680 all-in-one.
the guide book says to follow the onscreen user guide on the Starter CD.
I have inserted the starter cd, and it is installed, but I haven't seen an onscreen user guide or anyplace where I can bring it up.

I have tried clicking the setup button onthe machine but I get busy onthe screen whenever I push it.
Also, if I turn it off, the only thing that appears on the machine is orders to align the paper. I have already done this 3 times, but it comes up every time.

so did I buy a lemon or is there some way I can get this figured out.

I have 2 HP multi purpose printers, but not the same model as yours. I really like them. What OS do you have? Have you been able to print on it?

    Nancy

ps. I'm not real techy, so doubt if I can help you. Have you tried going to the HP site and looking to see if someone else has had this problem?

I bought an HP 6500 something or an other all in one wireless version and had nothing but problems. My problems were hardware and HP sent me a new duplex
unit, but that didn't do it so they ended up replacing the printer. I did spend a lot of time speaking to someone in India, but that is the way it got handled.

I have an awful time with accents, I can't even understand the Brittish TV shows. My wife often hears me saying 'Why can't the English speak English', but it just comes down to me not hearing as well as I should and just not getting the accent. (Sorry Brittish friends).

So, if you can understand the accent from India better than I can, then I would give them a call. They will be able to walk you through the setup.

Probably not the answer you were looking for, but I have no idea what is wrong.

have you looked on the CD installation disk itself? Look for a PDF or HTML file in one of the folders.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

        “You shouldn't wear that body.”

HP Officejet J3600 All-in-One Printer Series

Setting up the HP All-in-One (Hardware)

          Introduction

This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the product.
Complete these steps before you install the product software on your computer.
If you already set up the product hardware, and need software installation help,
see Links to Software Installation Instructions at the end of this document.

This document includes the following steps to set up the product:

          Unpack the All-in-One
Check the contents of the box
          Unfold the paper trays
Attach the control panel faceplate, if not attached
          Load plain white paper
Connect the power cord and adapter
          Turn the All-in-One on
          Select the language and country/region
          Set the date and time
          Install the cartridges
          Align the cartridges

          Setting up the All-in-One
Follow these steps in order. When you are finished, you can click the appropriate link
at the end of this document if you need instructions to install the product software.

          CAUTION:
Do NOT connect the USB cable now. You need a USB cable to connect
the product to the computer, but you will be prompted to connect it at t
he correct time during software installation.

          Step one: Unpack the All-in-One

Remove the tape from the outside of the product, and then open it. Be sure to remove and discard the orange shipping lock.
Pull down the paper tray. Remove the packing material from the inside of the product, including the packing material around the carriage that holds the cartridges.
          Pull down the paper tray

Step two: Check the contents of the box

The contents might vary by country/region.
See the packaging for a list of items shipped in the box.

Step three: Unfold the paper trays

Raise the document feeder tray on top of the product, and then open out the lower tray extender.
Open feeder tray and tray extender
          Open document catcher

Step four: Attach the control panel faceplate, if not attached

Fit the faceplate tabs into the slots on top of the product.
          Install control panel faceplate
Rotate the faceplate down, and then firmly press down on the front corners until they both snap into place.
          Snap the faceplate into place

          NOTE:
Make sure that all edges are even with the product, and that all buttons come through the holes in the faceplate. The control panel faceplate must be attached for the product to work.

Step five: Load plain white paper

Follow these steps to load plain paper.
          Raise the document catcher.
Slide the paper-width guide to its outermost position.

Tap a stack of paper on a flat surface to align the edges, and then check the paper for the following:
Make sure it is free of rips, dust, wrinkles, and curled or bent edges.
Make sure all the paper in the stack is the same size and type.
Insert the stack of paper into the input tray with the short edge forward and the print side down. Slide the stack of paper forward until it stops.

CAUTION: Make sure that the product is idle and silent when you load paper into the input tray. If the product is servicing the cartridges or otherwise engaged in a task, the paper stop inside the device might not be in place. You could push the paper too far forward, causing the product to eject blank pages.

NOTE: If you are using letterhead, insert the top of the page first with the print side down. For more help on loading full-size paper and letterhead, refer to the diagram engraved in the base of the input tray.

Slide the paper-width guide inward until it stops at the edge of the paper.
Do not overload the input tray; make sure the stack of paper fits within the input tray and is no higher than the top of the paper-width guide.
          Lower the document catcher.

Step six: Connect the power cord and adapter

Plug the product end of the power adapter into the back of the product.
Plug the adapter end of the power cord into the power adapter.
Plug the remaining end of the power cord into a grounded wall outlet or surge protector.

Step seven: Turn the All-in-One on

Press the Power button to turn the product on.

I bought the j4680 a year ago and had problems on the laptop I had at that time. The new laptop I got in April I never loaded with the CD but asked it to "find" the wireless printer and connected through the wizard. Nary a problem.

I know this doesn't help and I'll dig and see what I can find in the morning. I am not a night person...

                okay here is my status:
I finally got the phone line to work, by not connecting it as the only phone on the line, but by putting in a splitter and connecting another phone. So it works with two phones off the same jack but not with one, that is contrary to my thinking.

I was able to put two numbers on the speeddial, but I am unable to remove one that is an erroneous number. Can't figure that out.

I was able to print something out from the computer.

I haven't sent or received a fax yet, and this is my question:

On my previous Panasonic fax machine, when I knew I was going to get a fax (only one phone line) I had the ringer set for two and I would push the fax button to on and whenever the fax was sent it would come through but no phone calls would go through, they would get the fax ring.
so i can't figure out how to set up the rings so I can get phone calls most of the time and switch to the fax mode when i know I am going to receive a fax.

right now I have it set at 6 rings, and I think I would have to turn off my answering machine so that the fax would pick up. But I don't know if this is correct.

I am power of attorney for two 87 year old aunts in tucson. They will be moving to assisted living on Jan 13. I have to handle all the paperwork, bills , etc, and I have been running out to fax the paperwork back and forth, so i really need this fax to work. I will be getting the rental agreement to sign shortly so i have to be up and running. I also have to forward their bills to their financial advisor, but the bills can't be sent directly to her.

Also I have been unsuccessful at setting the header with my phone number, time and date stamp, etc.

I have comcast internet service through my cable line.

In wisconsin, i have Verizon through my phone line, and that looks even more complicated.
I really think I will be going to garage sales to try to find old Panasonic fax machines to bring back to Wisconsin.

Lastly, I have never used a scanner, but I am assuming I put the paper int he same slot I would for a fax and push scan and it would scan into my computer?

                    RE:

                    Fax

You can test your HP fax setup to check the status of the device and to make sure it is set up
properly for faxing. Perform this test after you have completed setting up the device for faxing.

The test performs the following tasks:

                    Tests the fax hardware.
Verifies that the correct phone cord is connected to the device.
Checks that the phone cord is plugged into the correct port.
                    Checks for a dial tone.
Checks for an active phone line.
Tests the status of your phone line connection.

The HP All-in-One device prints a report with the results of the test. If the test fails,
review the report for information about how to fix the problem and rerun the test.

                    Testing the fax setup

Set up the device for faxing according to your particular home or office setup instructions.
Make sure that the print cartridges are installed, and that full-size paper is loaded in the
input tray before starting the test.

On the control panel, press Setup .
Select Tools , and then select Run Fax Test .
The device displays the status of the test on the display and prints a report.

                    Review the report.
If the test passes and you are still having problems faxing,
check the fax settings listed in the report to verify that the settings are correct.

                    NOTE:
A blank or incorrect fax setting can cause faxing problems.

                    If the test fails,
review the report for more information on how to fix any problems found.

After the fax report is reviewed, press OK .
If necessary, resolve any problems found and rerun the test.

the biggest problem is the installation disk does not boot up - so I can't read any instructions. I already had a computer teacher here and it will not boot up.

I have run the fax test, it is working.
I tried to set up the time stamp, etc. I was unable to change the pm to am, and the date is 12 hours off, and I haven't figured out how to erase anything - again no directions.

My biggest problem is to receive a fax when I am not home. I am not sure how to set up the machine to do this as I only have one phone line. I am going to Office max this afternoon to see if they can assist me.
I was hoping that someone who had a fax and only one phone line would tell me how they do it.

Don't know if I remember correctly or not. I set answering machine to 3 or 4 rings, then fax to more than that. Mine works fine. Goes to answering machine then if it is a fax coming in goes to fax.

On my HP 6210 to set date and time. Press Setup then cycle through menu until find Basic Fax Set UP. Press OK then number 1 is Date and Time.

ps. If you need someone to fax you, let me know and I'll do it.

HP Officejet J3680 All-in-One Printer - Fax Answer Mode

                            Answer mode
                            is a series of presets
that determine how the fax answers an incoming call

If you have Equipment and or services sharing the phone line
A shared voice and fax line with an answering machine.

The Recommended Answer mode should be
                            AnswerMachine

                            The Answer mode function....

The HP Fax does not automatically answer calls.
Instead, the answering machine will answer the call,
and the HP Fax will monitor the line. If the HP Fax detects
fax tones, the HP Fax automatically receives the fax.
Otherwise, the answering machine records the incoming message.

Jya-Ning, Nancy, Marti, these pposts have been a tremendous help.
I think I have it set up correctly, will need to do some testing, I never would have realized I needed to press the "black" button and would have been totally frustrated in trying to send a fax.

I was able to delete the incorrect number in my speed dial (important for me becuase I do not have long distance service and use a calling card)

However, I still can't figure out how to change the pm to am on my date , clock so i am 12 hours off, probably not important.

Anyhow, it sounds like I will not have to turn off my answering machne to receive a fax, just set my answering machine to 4 rings and my fax to 5 or more rings and the fax will pick it up automatically if it is not a voice message.
