Sony Vaio Laptop using Windows XP

Wanted to clean up my computer
instead - it looks like it may have
to go into the stop... Please Help

When doing the system recovery an error pops up
saying ~ check sum error in c:\ sony.img
    The recovery process is incomplete.
Then when the computer restarts up it says
    "Error loading operating system"

    What do I do?
    Thank You...

Do you have the windows disk, If so try to repair it if that does not work you might have to reinstall windows.

I would try repairing it as Frank suggested. After trying that, let us know what happened. If that doesn't work, there are other things to try but I need to know what happens when you try to repair it first.

A check sum error means that the computed check sum for a file does not match the stored check sum indicating the file is corrupted. If it is not a disk failure, it can be fixed by rewriting the corrupted area.

A check-sum on a single file shouldn't knock you out of the water completely unless you are having disk problems.
Try repairing from windows disk as Frank suggested.
If you can get the thing funning at all try running chkdsk with the /r. should be able to fix this kind of a problem.
If you get despirate and really don't want to reload windows I have had luck in the past with disk problems where computer wouldn't boot by taking the hard drive out of one computer and adding it to another computer as secondary hard disk (I have an external enclosure to do this from). Once attached to other computer as second disk run chkdsk /r on it and sometimes that fixes a problem with disk and then allows it to boot when put back in first computer. This is kind of a last ditch effort but I fixed my son's laptop this way last year.

I a few times took my hard drive out and put it in the freezer for a few hours, I was able to get it back up again to save my info before the hard drive failed again.
