I assume that on an iPod that you need to run the battery almost all the way down so that it doesn't get a preset level of discharge. Is this correct?

No not for lithium batteries that are used in iPods. Charge it as you need to. You will most likely replace it before it dies.

I bought an IPod Touch in November and had to get in touch with Apple about setting up my email. Whilst talking to the Rep he said I would get more life out of the battery if I didn't keep it on charge and that I would get longer playing time before needing to recharge it. So now I wait until I get the 20% battery warning before recharging. Give Apple a call and ask them, you may get a different Rep than I did.

I agree with this. There is some degradation but in general the battery will most likely outlast the device no matter what you do with charging.
