Speakers of printers . . . I have an HP Deskjet hooked up to Ole POC.

Did you know that there is like a sorta inkwell underneath where the cartridges sit over on the right? I guess the cartridges must leak. There's a little blotter sorta thing sitting in the inkwell.

What do you think that looks like after 13 years!!!!???? Yuck. I don't think it was intended to be that much ink there.

I would not have noticed it except that I was replacing a cartridge and when I slid the printer out to get to it, there was a puddle of black ink on the printer stand.

I pulled that little blotter out and have tried cleaning up the ink, and now the cartridge carriage will not return. There is a thingy over in the area of that inkwell that has to move, & I have done something to it, or it is clogged with thick, gooey black ink.

I'll be taking it apart from the bottom and checking it out.

It's my understanding that the AVG virus program can cause problems like that... I thought I warned you take care of that little issue. only joking.

No, the cartridges do not "leak". As part of the standard operation, the printer will "clean" the cartridges before or after a printing job as needed. The cleaning consists of ejecting small amounts of ink and wiping the head to prevent clogging. The spill tray collects that ink and should just dry (or get to a thick paste) in the tray. Generally, you should never even mess with that ink tray (as you found out, as that can cause problems).

Yeah, it caused problems, but it was certainly more than a bit of thick paste. There was that, to be sure, about 1/4' buildup of thick paste, plus it was spilling over and leaking onto the printer stand . . . a nice little puddle.

& that is typical?

Perhaps it's time to open the purse strings and get a new printer. I tend to buy a new one when the cartridge cost exceeds the cost of a new printer with fresh cartridges.

I doubt that Ole POC will be compatible with any new printers, or vice versa. WIN 98, you know.

What's going on is there is a mechanism that slides above/across the ink well, moving from the front toward that back of the printer. Attached to that is another spring-loaded/pop-up mechanism with two little depressions where the cartridge ink openings appear to rest.

That entire mechanism slides forward as far as it can go, then sticks. It acts as though it should come back, but does not.

That entire area there is saturated with ink.

I could not find a way to remove the bottom of the printer case to get at the problem area.

While I'm at it . . . the golf cart shot craps and I gave it to the local repair guy for parts. He gave me $100 bill & a sympathy card.

Last week there was a big wind and a lake-side dock cable broke. I did not realize it was totally broken until I cranked it all in. Now a diver has to come and try to find the dock anchor, and fasten a new cable.

Lately, everything I touch breaks.

I'm afraid to go to the bathroom.

You may be right about the compatibility issues. However, check out ebay, craigslist, and garage sales. You'll have no problem finding older printers dirt cheap.

Already have. A couple of good-looking, working 882s not far and a 932 not far. Since I just got two color cartridges for my 882, and the driver is already loaded, it will be worth a little longer drive to get an 882.

Sure not worth messing with mine.

Yeah, cheap or free . . . most are just trying to find a home for their doorstops.

Oh yeah, speaking of drivers, I'm tracking my new one (Taylormade Superfast Burner) and it made it to St. Louis today. I actually have two coming, but that's another story.

Already have. A couple of good-looking, working 882s not far and a 932 not far.

The folks with the 932 just happen to be coming to my neck o the woods today. A very unlikely happenstance, so I'll go with it.

They had it with WIN98, too.

If it doesn't work out, I can always get another 882 it appears. I heard from one of them and they still have it.

Black is working on the 932 (with a new cartridge) and a bit of color with the old cartridge that came with it. That is with the 882 driver. Ole POC did not want to read the driver disc that came with the 932. You can hear it spinning but it won't open.

I could not do a full print align, so figure I better get the 932 driver, which is now downloading off the Internet . . . from HP.

Anyone need a couple of new HP 23 (color) cartridges? They just arrived this week.

First, physically disconnect the new printer. Next I would go into control panel -> printers and "remove" the existing (old) printer. Then run the installer for the new printer driver (double-click the file). It should prompt you to connect your new printer.

This is from memory -- I haven't dealt w/ Windows 98 for close to a decade, so take this with a grain of salt. Good luck!

I got 932 installed and it did not work. Actually, the whole POC would not work. Everything I did got an illegal action warning and shut-down.

I installed the 932 driver and the printer is working again on the 882 driver already in the computer.

I meant to say uninstalled, so that the 932 is working on the 882 driver in Ole POC.

I installed a 932 driver in DW's LT, and it now uses the new old 932 printer. For Ole POC I have it using a parallel port and DW's LT is using a USB.

I set the 932 to be her default printer, but when I checked her printer settings just now although it had the 932 checkmarked as the default, her other printer showed as being "Ready" and the 932 as being "Offline".

Hmmmmm?

This is pretty advanced for me, sorta like trying to understand TPU's.
