What do you do with your old computers, printers, etc.?

I ask because I have seen the stories about the recyclers who illegally ship them to that village in China, which has become a toxic waste dump.

Is there any place where they actually get some good out of them? Or dispose of them properly?

In my case, the county has a recycle center that takes the monitors, computers (laptop or desktop), printers, TVs all for free. However, if you want to drop off a microwave, they want $15. I don't get it, but that is how they work.

I don't think you can be totally sure what happens once they leave your hands. They are supposed to be recycled according to materials, pc board assys, cabinets (plastic or metal), etc. It depends on what is in them.

More and more of our customers are asking for RoHS compliant materials in the transformers and inductors that we make. The parts typically go on to a contract manufacture who ends up making industrial, consumer or medical products that also are RoHS complaint through their manufacture process. This will reduces much of the hazardous waste.

Check out your local Best Buy - some of the stores have a recycling program, though I'm not sure what happens to them after that. Definitely destroy the hard drive before you get rid of the computer.

It is on their website and the program is called Greener Together.

I called our local store and they take printers free. Monitors (anything with a screen) cost $10, and they give you a $1o gift card.

Computers free with hard drive removed, $19.95 to have a tech remove them.

              Nice program.

(then they go to that village in China )

                No hassle.

You go to Customer Service upfront. They ring it up and give you a receipt.

I was planning to remove my hard drive -- did a search online re:doing this.

According to the video, you need special gloves. This frightened me a wee bit, so I am still stuck with 2 old computers.
                  hope this info helps,
