It's the little box that lets you stream Netflix and other providers' movies and TV shows to your TV. They cost about $60 to $100, so for one to suddenly appear in the mail is odd and delightful! Who sent it? Maybe it's a gift?
You'll need to subscribe to Netflix, but Netflix is pushing "The Gift of Netflix" this year, so maybe it's all one big present.

I have mine setup to receive Netflix and several other channels including one that is old sci fi. That channel cost me $3 a year. There is old cowboy movies on another channel. There are a lot of free public domain movies on some other channels. I like having Roku. I may even take it on my next vacation if I can get internet to it.
If you go to Roku Digital Video Player | Watch Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand and MLB.TV on Roku Player, you will find more information on the box, making the connections and the channels available.
You can select the netflix movies online from your computer, or on the roku, but it is easier on the computer.Don

Got the Roku yesterday.
I was really looking forward to this. But in the end I am not totally won over. Yes it is good for netflix and some of the other premium content. But it just does not serve up a nice consistent HD image.
There are many channels that have audio, but I cant see leaving on the TV just for audio.
I will keep it for a few more weeks, take a wait and see attitude.
Might get a PS3 or a Blu Ray player to use for Netflix.Flying at MACH4 +

I LOVE my Roku. I actually just purchased a new TV and a WIFI included Blu-Ray thinking I would be replacing the Roku with the Blu-Ray BUT each one has it's own apps/channels. Some overlap..like Netflix but I don't care for the other movie channels on the Blu-Ray while Roku has Amazon on demand.
The Roku also has TuneIn which is my new love...I know Billymach said he doesn't need audio but I get terrible reception where I live...and in order to pick up stations from the LA area I was using my Ipod touch and streaming them putting the ipod in one of my kids' clocks that play the Ipod and carrying it around the house pluging it in when I needed it (So I didn't have to be tethered to the ipod while I say, blow dry my hair) Now-I have it loud and clear in my living room playing through the surround sound. In addition, some friends of mine do an Internet radio show out of their home and I was always tied to the computer or a laptop to listen to it and now it's available on TuneIn through the Roku and I'm free as a bird. LOVE IT!
Needless to say-I'm keeping both the Roku and the Blu-ray hooked up.
Rapmarks,
Give it a chance. Even when we hooked up our new stuff-it told me exactly what to do. How to set up the device-how to log in to my account for say Netflix or Radiotime (Tunein) and gave me a code to tell the computer about my device. I'm not tech saavy in the least and it was very easy.
