Google OS Beta Testers

Are you interested in Beta Testing? Do you " live on the web?" Google has developed a new Operating system based on Google Chrome OS (what the Chrome browser uses). You can read about it here, in a current press release.

Google started recruiting for beta testers last month. I applied and received one of the laptops. The only "string" so far is that if you crash or find a problem they'd like you to report it. That's only happened to me once (although RCI didn't run on it unless I used the IE Tab extension). It appears they are still accepting testers, so if you are interested, you can apply here after reading more about the program.

If anybody is participating in the Beta, I'd be interested in knowing, either here or by email.

I gave it shot and just applied. How did you find out that you were accepted and how long did it take?

It took about three weeks I guess. I didn't know anything about it until the laptop arrived, unless I got an email in my spam and didn't notice. I don't know exactly when it arrived, cause I was gone and my housesitter picked it up.

I forgot one thing. You have to have a Google account (duh...) to use it. Having a gmail.com account qualifies, and everyone should have one of those.

I thought I had one up on my son by mentioning this thread but he came back and said that he has been on the wait list for over a month now.

Frank, there is no way that we can compete with today's youth and certainly not when they are in college.

In my case I could never compete with my son since he is going to a computer engineering School.

Did he get a note saying he is on a wait list? Even if he did, that doesn't mean that they aren't still accepting testers. Maybe their quota for college students, or college aged students, or computer students and/or IT Professionals is full. That doesn't mean that some of us oldsters can't get them...

I just found out that they are still sending out computers to people who have applied for them. Some people have had luck tethering them, and some have not. It works with wi-fi, and they also include some free Verizon 3G with it for when you travel. You can pay for more, but I think the allotment is pretty generous.

They have a very active email advice/question group. I'm subscribed in digest mode, and they send out at least once per day or when there are 100 messages. I've gotten at least 10 digests today. Hopefully it will taper off somewhat.
