Sony Vaio Laptop Windows XP
Monitor light will not stay on!

Any idea how much it will cost
to repair or replace (backlight)

Computer works with tv
and/or desk top monitor.

Marti when the screen went out on my SIL HP lap top it turned out to be cheaper to buy an esternal 19 inch moniter.

How old is the lap top because if you paid by Amex and it is under 2 years old you are covered with Amex. My Laptop hard drive went after 23 months and Amex paid $450 to send it out and get it repaired

With a laptop screen it is probably a wire problem. Most of the wires going to the screen in a laptop are part of the hinge system and can break easily. The manufacturer will want to sell you a new screen but if you can find a repair shop that does "board level" repairs you may be able to get it repaired relatively cheaply..

They said, the computer has to be sent to St. Louis, Missouri
The charge is $89. to check it out and afterwards they would
contact me and let me know how much it will cost to fix it

Haven't priced a monitor in the last little while, but I suspect you can probably buy a new one for less than that depending on what you have.

I'd find a local computer repair shop. Often the diagnosis will be free if you have them do the repair.

When Alaska Air smashed my laptop screen I just found another on eBay (~$50) and replaced myself. Lots of screws to unscrew, but it's not all that hard.
