  • UPS Virus

I got it. I guess it's been around so long I didn't figure it was still around.

AVG quarantined it, but I am missing icons on the taskbar and none of my desktop shortcuts work. I can control volume . . . it is muted. I'm not sure AVG is even running now.

I tried System Restore, but it won't open. I can't get any programs to run. When I try, I get a window asking what program I want to use to open that file, when it normally would just open.

In the Control Panel, when I click on Add or Remove Programs or Security Center, it says Application not Found.

When I switch users to my wife's, everything appears to be fine. AVG is running there. There are two Viruses and 1 Malware in the Virus Vault and the AVG History shows the events, and that they were handled. It shows it attacked my Documents and Settings. It shows AVG updates since then.

I'm not sure how I did it, but I just got AVG to open with me as a user, but I still don't have a taskbar icon. (What I did was rightclick the desktop AVG icon and got a window saying, "Which account do you want to use to run this program?" My account was the default, so I clicked OK, and AVG appeared.

That didn't help. It ended when I logged off. There's still a bunch of stuff not running and I can't open anything.

    Help!

I stumbled onto System Restore in Safe Mode, and it seems to have done the job.

    Thank me very much.

My husband received this yesterday in his work email - they got it.
It must be making the rounds again.

        Did he get it fixed?

I googled a fix in Safe Mode, but when I got there it asked if I wanted to try System Restore, so I figured why not? I could not do System Restore in normal mode.

I have the other fix written down if he needs it.

          Thanks,
When I said "they got it" I meant the IT Dept's. anti-virus software only allowed a "scrubbed" version to make it thru to his email account.

We both got the emails, but thankfully not the virus.

By "it seems to have done the job," I mean it in the way that when I logged onto my account this morning, it was like I have never been there.

                Everything is gone.

So I did System Restore again, and everything is back.

While it is, I think I will go look and see if the virus is still corrupting the startup.

I did not see anything and Startup was OK.

That's two in the last year AVG has missed . . . let me catch.

But, at least I could something with it once I had it.

I got that email again today, so . . . don't open anything with UPS in it.

I don't know what got my computer but that has been why I have been AWOL this week.

Nasty thing. Favorites = gone. Desktop Icons = gone. Worst of all my document file = gone.

It could have been worse as I just did a doc back-up 10 days earlier when I first noticed "issues" with the laptop. Losing 2 years worth of work data would have been extremely ugly.

FWIW I did not open any questionable emails and I don't go to questionable websites. My computer was not connected to the internet from the time I left home Friday night until I arrived home late Sunday afternoon. Crash and burn started Monday.

I seem to have gotten it back to a liveable condition until new Vostro arrives. I hope.

                        Have you tried System Restore?

It took two System Restores for mine. Then I defragged. It's back to slow, like always.

The only difference is that Favorites is now in alphabetical order.

I see some FedEx emails as well as the UPS stuff in my junk mail, so I wonder if that's also a virus. Some of my email programs clean incoming spam, but I'm not betting it always works. My desktop is a mess, so I may retire it until I get the nerve to wipe it and start over. My older desktop works, so I may bring that back into service and give the laptop a vacation one of these days.
