I returned to Wisconsin with a new laptop, HP Pavillion Notebook.
My printer here is a HP deskjet 3600. I installed it, but when i attempt to print, it is not doing anything. it goes through the motions, says it is printing, but never gets past that stage. I have turned off printer, rebooted computer, etc, nothing happening. I did the troubleshooting yesterday, didn't help, can't find it today to try again. any suggestions?

Will it print a test page? I don't know the specifics for that model, but you should be able to print a test page by pressing a button or combination of buttons from the front panel.

Also, if it is a fairly old printer, it may not be supported by your new laptop's OS -- I'm assuming Windows 7, right?

yes, windows 7. I must have bought the printer in 04 or 05. it is listed as a printer,it is installed, it says it is printing, but nothing happens. i did find troubleshoot, it ran diagnostics, it says something in the quie is blocking it, i deleted it, tried again, nothing happens.

Did you check to see if it is the default printer?

If you right-click on the printer icon, click 'Preferences' and then click 'Print Test Page', does it print?

First check the HP website to be sure that the printer is supported in Windows 7 and if so, that you have the latest driver. (Note that it's possible that the printer uses native Windows drivers, in which case there won't be a driver available to download.) Then disconnect the printer, turn it off, and also uninstall the printer from the computer.

Now shut down the computer and reboot. After the computer is fully booted, reconnect the printer, turn the printer on, and let Windows start device installation. When you have the opportunity during installation to tell Windows where to find the driver, select that option and navigate to the location where you stored the driver. Also select the option to print a test page.

If you can't get a test page after doing this, then you should check tech support at HP. There should be a message board where you can search for reports of similar problems and what people have done to fix.

You can also use Google and type in "printer won't print + Windows 7" and a multitude of sites will pop up. I know this because we have two new Windows 7 computers and we spent two days this week getting them to work with the printer we have in Mexico--we had previously wrestled with them in Arizona. You would think the same technique would work both places, but you would be wrong.

                Good luck--it can be done!

I would go with Steves suggestion. It is probably a Windows 7/driver problem.

According the the HP support web site, no driver download is needed -- the 3600 series is supported with the drivers built into Windows 7.

The link I added is to a support page for your printer -- not sure if that will help, but it might be worth it to disconnect your printer, remove / delete the printer from your printers menu, and then go through the steps outlined on that support page to re-add the printer.

                    Good luck!

                      A couple of other things.

Did you check to make sure it's plugged firmly into the computer (yes, I know - but has to be asked)? If it's USB, try plugging it into another port (move to the back if plugged in the front, front if in back). Check the cable connection on the printer end - is the cable firmly plugged into the printer?

Pull up the printer dialog box - the one in the taskbar after you've tried to print. There's an option to pause print jobs. Is it on pause? If so, chose the option to resume printing.

Sometimes the printer will not print if the cartridge(s) is old and has been refilled.

I agree with the two folks who said to reinstall the printer. Unplug printer from PC, remove from "Printers". then plug back in and let Win 7 do it's thing to reinstall it.

I uninstalled, reinstalled, the print job i the queue came out, but nothing else would print. I have tried moving it to a different usb location, everything just stays in the print queue, so i am thinking one of two things, old USB cord isn't working properly, or what Tony said, old ink in printer. Having company for a few days, so will have to gt back to it later. thanks

I have one last suggestion ... connect the printer to another computer (laptop would do fine). Does it work from the new system? If it does, then your problem is not with the printer, ink, cable, etc - but is more likely either a driver issue or a hardware (usb port) problem.
