What do I need to do for virus protection for my wife's iPad?

There isn't much to do. You can't install programs except through the App Store (unless you jailbreak it). There are a few known vulnerabilities, but (again, unless you jailbreak) the only thing to do is wait for Apple to push an update to iOS.
