computer ready TV

we just bought a new TV and it says it is computer ready.
We have a ROKU for streaming movies, but my son thought we might be able to stream movies to the tv without the ROKU. Suppossedly I can use the tV as a computer screen, but how do you do that?

Connect the two with HDMI cable. You can get one on ebay for $1-$2 shipped. We had to buy a new PC (actualy my son put one together from a barebone kit for $230) for video streaming after buying a new TV . The old PC did not have HDMI connection.

so if I get an HDMI cable, connect tv to my laptop, I can watch a tv show that I missed on the TV, through my computer. How about if I skype someone, can I see them on the big TV?

I bought a Visio TV last year, and it has the Netflix access built into it. You have to connect the TV to your wireless network or you can connect directly with an ethernet cable to your router.

If your laptop has an HDMI port, you can configure the TV an additional monitor. You can either configure it as the only display, as a mirror display of your laptop display, or as a second display (where you can move your mouse pointer and windows between the two displays).

First, just connect it and boot up the computer. Then you go into Display Settings (on a Windows laptop) and there you can configure how the computer is to use that new display.

So bottom line, anything you can now do on your laptop, you should be able to display on your TV hooked up to the laptop. That includes watching videos, viewing slideshows of pictures, etc.
