If had a dollar for every time I've seen arrogance stand in the way of common sense the last ten years, I'd have a place at the lake, and a winter place in Florida, and play golf every day I want to.
This morning when I logged on, I was greeted with a solid blue lock light and a dead computer.
I googled it on DW's LT and found a techie on youtube doing the fix on his workbench, reseating the memory cards.
I followed it and got my computer going again, except that re-attaching the keyboard ribbon cable was not as easy as on the video. &, I had no keyboard. I struggled with a dozen more attempts, not knowing exactly how the cable fit in, of course, to no avail.
So, I called a local computer repair store I found on the Internet.
My main purpose was to find out if they were someone I wanted to take my computer to. I explained what I have here, and I could tell his arrogance determined I am a dufus who got on the internet and let another dufus screw up my computer.
He said I needed to bring it in and he had to do 6 hours of diagnostic, maybe 8, to see what was wrong.
Rather than just hanging up, since we are new here, I persisted. I asked him why he thought I told him what I had done, why I told him I had problems re-attaching the keyboard cable, and since the keyboard is the only thing not working, why he would not just start there if I brought it in?
He said he does not diagnose computers over the phone. he said it could be anything. He said he had to run diagnostics. He said his minimum charge was $89.
I said, "Goodbye."
I called another local repair store, and the tech called me back.
I explained everything again, including, now, calling the other store. He said, "Why would someone not look at that (the keyboard cable) first? I've seen them re-attached the wrong way all the time. Try it again and if you can't get it, our diagnostic charge is $45. If it is just the keyboard cable, that will be the total charge."
So, I tried three or four more times, the last time I guess I got it right.
So, again, why do so many people think everyone else is a dufus, so much so that they are not even willing to listen?
Come to think of it, the first guy had a point, that if you find someone or something on the Internet, that person may just be a dufus, since that's how I found him.
