Just checking to see if anyone uses, or is familiar with computer benefits from AOL.

As part of our credit card being compromised, AOL was unable to collect our monthly fee. In dealing with that, I discovered they had migrated us to a higher level of benefit, without ouir knowledge. I migrated us back down, but even it has benefits I had not known about, or activated.

First, we are entitled to McAfee, free.

Second, our computers have "up to $750 per year in extended computer protection to help protect the computers in our home that are no longer covered under the original manufacturer's warranty."

Anyone know anything about either of those.

(Our AVG is doing fine . . . knock, knock, knock . . . and I can imagine trying to download and install McAfee by dial-up.)

Comcast (my provider) used to have McAfee for their free service. They have now gone to Norton.

I think that McAfee is a large file. If you are doing this by dial-up, it may take a while to download.

I have no knowledge of AOL, features or workings.

Actually this is not correct. AOL is *not* the Internet. It is a service which provides content of its own, and also a front end which allows you to connect to the internet through AOL. You do know that its been free for a number of years, right?

I had a job once working for a company that made modems. At the time I was there, they had standard product that would be at 1200 baud, and new stuff coming out that I was working with that would go up to 2400 baud.

I had one of those. And later on, when we got the 14.4 modems, we would have to listen to the "chicken scratch" sounds to see if it dumbed us down when connecting (in which case I'd hang up and call back).
