  • Wireless woes.

    Now what?

    OK. It worked yesterday.

    It worked this morning.

    But it ain't working tonight...

I can see the network. The network connections properties say I am connected to the wireless network. But when I try to access the internet the page(s) aren't found.

The router is showing ports 1 and 4 in use. The desktop is physically connected to Port 1. NOTHING is connected to port 4.

How do I fix this thing? Have I been hi-jacked?

PS: Gophish I saw your reply on the shared files, etc. last night. Gotcha.

    Lawren,

I am the least technical person around, but that periodically happened to me when I first got my laptop and Tech Support (DH) instructed me to unplug the router for a few seconds and plug it back in. Then I would have to reboot, but it usually worked.

    Good luck.

In all likelihood, your router isn't assigning an IP address properly to your PC. I would try rebooting it first to see if that fixes the problem. If it worked before, it willl probably work again.

Do you know if DHCP is set up on the router? I would look at the IP address table in the router to see if the IP addresses are the same for at least a day for both devices. If the IP addresses are changing, then it's possible that you are running out of assignable IP addresses and you need to reset the router.

          It's the OS silly

If you are running XP this is all too common. The XP firewall - a worthless bit of software if there ever was one - has a history of messing up wireless connectivity. When you can connect - even by wired connection - download a program called winsockxpfix.exe. You will need it very often if you are wireless and in XP. It fixes the winsock files that xp corrupts or alters all too regularly. Also turn off Windows control of your wireless connections and turn that job over to the software that comes with your wireless card. A good rule is to always use a quality third party software if it is available rather than the windows supplied garbage. So use Thunderbird email client rather than Outlook/Express; use Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape rather than IE, a good firewall like ZoneAlarm rather then the Iwndows junk, etc. You PC/laptop will thank you.

Thank you so much for all your help at this forum. I really appreciate it and I am sure that all of us do.

Recently, in Hawaii, I signed up for a free AOL dial-up connection and now I can't get dial-up connection with EarthLink or Surfside.net on my PC notebook. I need this connection at our marina. What do I do?

I am trying to call Toshiba for help tonight. I am ready to buy a Verizon PC card and don't need any of it anymore but it won't work on a Mac or our desktop Dell computer so that is not a solution either. Why can't computers be compatible and OS systems too? They just love to make it complicated.

How do I remove that AOL dialer or whatever invaded my Toshiba notebook? TIA.

Also you can try repairing the connection. This sometimes works if you have lost your IP address from the router.
Find the small wireless icon in the system tray at the bottom of your screen and right click it. Choose the repair option and the system will attempt to "repair" the connection.

Ken, if we use this feature we first have to disable the Panda Software. Lawren may have to do the same thing if she uses Norton AntiVirus or McAffee? None of these systems seem to work together. I guess, they want you to buy all their stuff and not buy from a competitor.

Lawren, I agree with Boca and Avery to restart the laptop, modem, and router. That should reestablish the connection. I use Charter Communication for my ISP and once in awhile I have to restart all the devices.

I am not an expert by any means with computers but I thought Windows XP Professional Edition was good at setting up and managing networks. I have 3 desktops hard wired and 3 laptops on wireless connections without any problems using Win XP Pro.

OK for the first time in 4ever I am going to turn EVERYTHING off tonight. Back to the Jacks as we used to say.

We will see if all bounces back in the AM.

Lawren, I have noticed that many times restarting the computer will give you connection immediately again or turning the DSL modem off and on again after a minute or two and restarting your notebook too. It must be Windows because our Mac doesn't have that problem ever. Good luck tomorrow!

This is why I like the Linksys' technical help available 24 hours per day. They are very good and have never charged me yet and now I have to call Toshiba to get my dial-up connections back. Never a dull moment trying to be on the Internet but what would we do without it? I would hate to have to watch TV.
