I'm old, feeble, and living in the past.

    Could someone please decipher this:

I show that you are currently paying for 768K. For your location, HSI is available for up to 8Mbps.

768K is your download speed. Not very fast if you are streaming video on your computer. Probably no need to upgrade, if you are just surfing the web and not downloading files. However, if you can upgrade to higher speed for no additional cost, you may want to do so.

If the last three years they said they were upgrading us to the fastest speed available at our location, and we are now at 768K when they are offering up to 8Mbps, do you think they actually upgraded us when they said they did?

Who told you that you have 768K? Was it your ISP?

In any event 768K is very slow in today's world. I have 25 Mbps. However you can probably live with it if you aren't into streaming video, etc. It is a matter of what is acceptable to you for how you use it.

Most ISP propaganda is with the term "speeds up to..." You will be very lucky to catch the highest (up to) speed. To see your real speed- scroll down in the topics in this forum and click on lets do a speedtest and see if you are really going fast enough to be ticketed by the internet police.

This is on my laptop which is wifi located 50' from the router through 4 walls. You lose some speed with a wifi connection. My desktop is a wired connection and it consistently hits 25 Mbps download/upload. I have Verizon FIOS which is fiber optic right to the home. In my location you can order it at different speeds 15/5, 25/25, 50/20, and 150/35 Mbps depending what you want to pay for it. It is NOT like cable that deteriorates depending how many people are on it.

It doesn't sound like it. You can run a speed test from one of the online sites for free. You can use Google to find them, or try the one in JWC's post.
