I returned home to a huge amount of paperwork regarding the two aunts I take care of (one is now deceased) went on computer, then made phone calls. went back to computer, a laptop, HP, less than 4 years old, and it wouldn't open to the page that lets you sign in. The light is on, the caps lock key is flashing, a slight whirring of the fan, but nothing else. tried turning off, tried removing battery and replacing, have the power cord attached, tried hitting control, alt, delete, tried hitting F8 and then F12 keys. nothing is happening.

currently on library computer, heading to a staples in a town two over, noplace else nearby here. will buy a new one if I have to but I can't understand the sudden problem.

in one week we head out of town for a month long trip and the drive to return to florida. I will have to have a computer with me for this trip. I don't have a phone with internet capabilities, or any other means of getting on internet.

You say it won't let you open the page that lets you sign in. What does show on the screen then? Is it just dark?

Did you drain all the power? After removing battery and unplugging, hold down the power button for at least 30 seconds. Then, put battery back in and plug in.

      Has it been running hot?

I had a similar problem with my desk top, was gone timesharing for a week and it wouldn't boot up. Unplugged it and let it sit several minutes and still wouldn't come on. So I left it unplugged for a day and then took it to the local computer repair shop. Wouldn't you know when the plugged it in, it booted right up. I left it there for testing and they couldn't find anything wrong, so $70.00 later I have it back home. Computers are great when they are working!

i did try leaving it unplugged for a long time, but I didn't remove the battery overnight. I did hold down the on/off switch for 30 seconds. it is currently at Staples and i am hoping for an easy fix. Staples isa 60 mile round trip for us . hope it can be fixed for the trip, and look into new one in Florida where they have shopping.

I know it is a little late now, but a simple thing to keep your laptop working longer is to periodically blow out the dust with a can of compressed air. There is so little air space in a laptop and that makes it extremely important to keep it clean; otherwise the airflow will be constricted and damage to the CPU is inevitable.

Too little, too late as usual.

I did not know about the compressed air. they said they could move the data to my new computer. I will have them do that, but i am wondering if a lay person could do that too.

They can, if they know what they are doing. The disc should be ok if the CPU went. Even when the disc goes, sometimes data can be retrieved, sometimes freezing the disc will work when nothing else does. Radio Shack is a hit or miss deal, you hit if the guy there knows his stuff and miss if he doesn't. Back up is a wonderful thing, tho losing some stuff can be a good thing too. I took my last desktop to Radio Shack and they wanted $ 150 to clean it up and remove viruses and malware. I took it home and did it myself for no cost. I've never used compressed air on a laptop- I just close it when it's not being used and use a cooler when it is in use. My Dell dates back to the spring of 2007 and still works very well.

Me, too. I'm ready. I can't unplug my LT without it shutting down. Both hinges are broken. I'm just done with it.

In good news, I had our landlines disconnected, so no more aol dialup.
