I can't find the way to shut down the computer or to get to the tools. I thought I was supposed to scroll to the right at top or bottom of screen and click right and some options would come up, Id click on the gear and then power. but I can't get those options to come up so I am doing something wrong.

To shut down, put cursor in upper right corner(no clicking) until a group of icons drop down along the right vertical edge. Click on the round gear looking icon and then your options to shut down or restart will be your options. We just got a new Dell via Costco with Windows 8 and we HATE it! Sounds like your close to getting it. The only hassle I got is that you need to drop the cursor directly down to the gear icon. A 8.1 update can't come soon enough!

I don't like it either, hope 8.1 is an improvement.

I have had Windows 8 for awhile now and there is a getting used to curve. You can still do most things, just very different. To get to the desktop from the start menu/apps look in the lower left corner. We almost always go there. The file symbol on the bottom is for libraries and files. When you click on the gear /settings on right side of the screen look above for control panel and other familiar things. I have seen advertisements for new computers with Windows 7 available. I still have a desktop with W7 and like using that even if that one is slower.

Might look at Start8, it is a third party software that makes Windows 8 look and act like Windows 7.
