the last two days, the tiles will not come up on the side where you have an opportunity to search, r to shut down or put computer to sleep. I am talking about the four icons that open up on the right hand side of the screen. anyone have suggestions?

You might have to force a shutdown and reboot. I have had similar things happen where the icon to power down, disappears. The forced shutdown did not affect anything else.
