  • DSL Internet Access

I currently am using cable modem to access the internet and have not had too many problems. I am considering going to DSL because it is much cheaper. Has anyone gone from Cable to DSL? Did it seem a lot slower? Do you have any problems with DSL?

Thanks in advance for any responses,

    Nancy

DSL is not any slower than cable modem. Also, many bell company offers different tier of DSL service. You can pay more to get even faster throughput. When the telephone company first roll out their DSL product, it usually took them a while to get it right. However, I believe it is getting much better now. Once it is installed correctly, it is actually quite fast.

With DSL it seems to matter how far away you are from the local telephone office. If you live far away, your speed will not be good even if you pay for the fastest service. If you live too far away, they will not even let you have it. Try to find out where the local office is so you know what to expect.

Our Verizon telephone men do the following speed test when they are at our home. We live borderline far away for DSL but are waiting for the FiOS connection which is fiber optics and distance doesn't matter and speed will be much faster too.

Unfortunately, some of us still can't get DSL I live in a relatively major metro area, inside the main county for that area, and it is unavailable! They are now planning to serve the smaller towns in the state, so we could be left dsl-less for a lot longer.

Anyone use dish service? I'm getting way tired of dial-up and have remained stubbornly opposed to feeding the greedy cable companies.

          Thanks

Thanks for the replies. I keep thinking there is a better and cheaper way for me, but guess I'll stay with cable in the meantime. (I live 2 places and if I'm away for any significant time, I shut cable off at one place, but if it's only a month, it isn't worth the bother of shutting it off and on.).

Do you have Vonage (or another VOIP phone service)? It seems that would be ideal for you.

You just take the phone adapter with you and plug it in at whichever place you are. The phone number travels with the adapter, so one phone number will work for you no matter which location you're at. And the cost of phone service (including long distance) will be about half of what you are paying for a single local phone service + long disatnce service right now.

              Thanks

No I don't have Vonage, but my kids do. I may look into that. My internet access in Virginia is no problem. I just call them to turn off and call to turn it back on. In Florida they aren't as sophisticated. They must come out to turn access on. When I leave, I have to take modem to cable company. Not really a problem, but there is always a time period when I'm not hooked up. I'd also like to leave it up both places, and sometimes do. No one else uses it in Florida, but my son uses it occasionally in Virginia, but not enough to warrent the monthy fee.
