  • Dial Up vs Wireless

A question - For money transactions, ie bank, credit card, stock broker, etc. transactions, how safe if a secure wireless network at home? I am trying to determine if I want to keep a paid dial up account to use for that purpose ( a plus is that I would be able to use for internet access while timesharing, since a lot do not have wireless or change way to much for it).

I am wireless all over the house but all my banking gets done on a wired secure line through a router and firewall. Doing banking even on a secure wireless is not my recommendation.

I am posting this from Tech Support (DH), so please don't ask me anything about it, but he thought it might be useful.

There's a thing called VPN (Virtual Private Networking) which might do the
      trick. It's explained here:

      =10942&contOid=100183520&prod_id=29182&locale=en-US

you need to copy/paste both lines into your browser, for some reason the second line isn't showing as a link

VPN should be used by everyone who is using a wireless router. And it is so easy to set.

But if its use becomes common I will have a harder time checking my mail while on the road

Big Frank, you said you used a router for wired connection. Please explain? I have AOL and thinking of switching for dial up to net zero. It is the same price now, about $10.00 per month. We have charter HSI - cable.

As long as you log-on under "https" ~~ it doesn't matter ~~ I know I've been retired from the "IT" field for a long time now ~~ There is always that threat but usual the website you are loggin-on to can stop that threat before you can log-on ~~ Ifin that does happen ~~ You have been hi-jacked for what ever reason ~~ Just make a call & its all handled in a matter of minutes ~~ Ifin you use Firefox browser ~~ You are much less risk than usin "IE" ~~ I use both but I use the "Beta" programs for security reasons cause they are tryin to make it better ~~ I have never been hi-jacked or victimized under either one ~~ I do all my stuff on-line ~~ I'm tryin to make you feel better bout the subject matter ~~ just tryin to let you know ~~ Don't make any bad mistakes ~~ Ifin you do ~~ there is always someone out there in the "Cyber world" to make hell for ya ~~ Its just common sense what ya do on the Internet ~~ Don't make it worst than need be ~~

I have a cable modem connected to a wireless router. On the wireless router you can connect it with a wired to a computer that is near by.

that's what we do here. BUT dh only does financial transactions on the hardwired PC in his office... though he maintains that the wireless signal is so weak noone would be able to pick it up, I can barely get it on the patio...

I think Frank is right in the direction he is pointing you to.
It's not really a question of wireless vrs dial up. To have the wireless in your setup you generally speaking have a cable or dsl line coming in which you then connect a router to that has wireless capability. The router can handle computers being directly connected to it so if you are worried about the security of the wireless then just connect one computer via direct connect and do your sucure stuff on that computer.
My wife does IT work for a bank that does not allow folks to use wireless for their laptops when working from home so I set up a line from our router that goes to her desk and she only connects directly with her bank laptop.

Thanks, will do, a heck of a lot faster than dial up when I am home. Away from home, will probably have to use dial up.
