Memory problems, Not a joke

I replaced my hard drive about a month ago on my laptop. I am running XP pro 512megs of ram, and have fully updated windows. Before my hard drive failed I used to be able to have many programs running, I used to have up to 30 pages of IE open at all times. Now if I have mare that 10 pages open my computer gets unresponsive. I have changed my amount of INTERNET memory on my hard drive to triple what windows had it set at and it did not help. I disabled Anti Virus because I thought that might be it since I used to have AVG with out any problems and now I have a 3 month free Norton AV. What is funny is that if I have 13 pages open and my Outlook express and the computer does not respond. I will close 1 page or outlook and it will work for a while and an hour later I have to close another. I have deleted my files but have not deleted my cookies. I have run a virus scan and run Ad aware.

How can I get my computer to handle more pages.

It sounds like you have done all the right things to try to troubleshoot this.
The only other suggestions I can come up with off hand would be to try to completely uninstall the Norton stuff instead of just turning it off and you could also try copying over you cookie file so you can restore and then deleting cookies just in case there is something in there that is causing a problem, but I doubt that is the case.
Is your Ad Aware up to date?

Agree. Go to Control Panel/Add or remove programs and dump Norton. It slowed my comp. down too.

Ad aware is up to date, I have a feeling it could be Norton causing this.

Looks like it might be good now. I am not sure if it was fixed by disabling Norton or if it was the AOL fix it program that did it. I might turn Norton back on just to see if it was Norton or not.

Well it just did it again. The computer started hanging up on me with 24 pages open. I need to have these pages open. Any idea how to increase the memory for this? I know when I ran AOL it increased a certain memory to 128mb but I am not sure how to go more than that.

It started getting worse so it got me working on finding how to fix it. I think I found it under my nose. I will see in a day or two if that was it.

Well it has been working good for 4 days and then it started acting up again. I deleted my cookies and files and closed a few open pages and it was still not responding. Then it just started working again.
Any ideas on how to get this fixed?

Frank, do you still have Norton installed? If so I'd start by un-installing that first. From my experience with Firewall and Antivirus software, Norton uses far more system resources than the others.

You can also try increasing your system's virtual memory. On Windows XP Professional:
Select System on the Control Panel
Select the Advanced Tab
Under the Performance heading, Click Settings
Select the Advanced Tab
Under the Virtual Memory heading, Click Change
Modify your settings and click Set

Right now Norton is still on the computer but is completely disabled. I had increased my Virtual memory prior to disabling Norton. I have a feeling Norton is the problem.
