  • Digital photos and size

I would like some feedback on taking digital photos for the purpose of adding them to the photo server here on TS4MS.

Normally I will shoot my digital pictures at a 3.1 mega pixel settings. When I do, the photo will be from 800kb to more than 1mb in size. These are much too large to add a photo to a post directly.

    1. Is there any way to adjust the size of the file to allow me to attach a photo like that to a post?

    2. What mega pixel size photos do you normally take for adding photos to the photo server?

    3. Any other suggestions on taking digital photos for use with this website and others where the file size is important?

    4. If there is a sticky or other information that I can read here, please direct me to it as I did not see it.

    Thanks everyone.

The photo server should automatically bring the uploaded picture to the correct size.

      Frank,

I've been able to load to the photo server. However when I try to attach a photo to a post through the manage attachments, it has a size restriction on the size of the photo file and the photos I tried to use were too large.

I saw how you added photos in one of the threads with some GB Packer pictures. What size was the file of the photos that you used?

Mike, you don't need to attach the photo here. Just link to it but instead of using this ( ) icon you use the the yellow one ( ). Try it.

          Emmy,

          When I use the

it asks me for a URL. What if I want to use a photo that is on my hard drive?

Yes, you need to have it uploaded to a server somewhere....

For images on a webapage, especullay this one you don't want to use anything larger then 800-pixels wide and frankly 600-wide is good enough. The photoserver will allow you to upload images that are oversized (to a point) but it takes a lot of work for the photoserver to resize images.

I would suggest looking at your camera and if you plan to post photos on the web use a lower resolution. I have a digital SLR and on the lowest setting my camer takes 1200x800 photos (or something like that) and even they are too big to be uploaded and need to be cropped down.

If you upload huge images to the photoserver you will use up your photosever space pretty quick and people on the site would likely rather see a dozen to two dozen pics that are 500-600px wide compared to 2-pics that were 3000px wide, and they would both take the same space!

Mike if you upload from your hard drive to a thread you are limited. If you upload to the photo server then copy the right URL then it will post like I did in the packers pictures. If you do not want to use the photo server you can use a free photo hosting company like http://imageshack.us/

                Ken, Frank and Emmy,

Thanks for your responses. My conclusion is that when I go on my Christmas trip to Flagstaff and Sedona, I should probably reduce the mega pixel setting for any pictures I would like to post here on the photo server.

As I said, I use the 3.1 mega pixel setting. What do you use for your digital photos?

I will look at the free photo web services to use. I am just trying to learn how others are able to post pictures here. I just don't want to post photos that are memory hogs if I can help if.

Mike if you are using our photo server you do not need to resize anything. i use a 6.1 mega pixel Nikon without trouble uploading to the photo server. Try using it now to see how easy it is. You can always remove the pic later if you want,

                    Frank,

Thanks for your information. I have previously uploaded into the photo server. It's very easy. But, the file size of my photos are eating up the memory space available to me. Therefore, smaller photo files are the solution as far as I can tell.

I may experiment and take a couple of photos with less mega pixels and see how large they are and how they look in the photo server.

All of this information is very helpful in understanding how to share photos here on TS4MS.

                        Frank,

I must be blind as a bat! I don't see the "UBB code". There's no code revealed except "[/quote]" I don't know what UBB code is; is that the web link to the photo?

As I said before, the lowest setting on your camera is better and there is no guarantee the photoserver will resize any image... you may also not like the results of the server resize... Take some photos before your trip and try uploading and see what happens...

Now is the time to see if you like what you get!

No, what you need to do is download a free program called Irfanview and use it to reduce the size of the photos you want to upload (640 vx 480 or 800 x 600 are good sizes to reduce to). That way you will still have good sized photos for any other use you may need them for. It can be downloaded from http://www.irfanview.com/ and can be used for a lot of other jobs on your photos as well.

I have used it for years and as far as I am concerned it is better than sliced bread
