My teenage son currently runs Linux within our home windows network consisting now of 4 computers and ancillaries.
I made him start out booting from a CD, then held out for a dual boot. He has since moved that computer to his room and shifted to a full Linux system. Eats up our bandwidth playing online computer games.
I'd say do it. Especially booting from the CD to start. Network wise no problems and often for the issues we have had linux handles them better, newer hardware equipment often not. He is running a 1.4 box, just a little (lot) older now.
Browsers - Linux have their own
versions, some of the major windows ones do have Linux versions. Firefox and Opera both do I believe.
