  • To Vista or not to Vista?

Now that the Vista OS is launched....would it be better to wait on buying the upgrade for one's XP home computer, or get it as soon as possible? Would it be wiser to see how many bugs are in it, give time for MS to come up with the usual Service Pack version or get the software now?

Anyone here already have the new OS Vista? Advice/feedback appreciated here.

I believe it will be available Tuesday. I would say WAIT. Microsoft never seems to get anything right until about the 35th try. VISTA should be debugged and working fine by about 2008. I just deleted IE 7.0 as it came up with an error about every other time I did something with it and now I'm back to IE 6 which I rarely use, preferring Firefox as a browser.

Costco and Staples have announced it is in stock.

I figured there was a prevailing feeling that it would be problematic.

I haven't had any problems with our IE 7.0, at least so far.

We sure don't enjoy the hassles...so I guess we will wait it out for a while.

We are interested in hearing from anyone who does do the upgrade. Thanks for your opinions.

As mentioned, wait. Also run the Microsoft Vista Compatibilty rogram. It will tell you if your computer has the right specs.
Are you my friend Danny? How about a Fresca?

Yes, we did run the compatability program and were given the "yes, you can upgrade." I guess they will continue to support XP for a time before "forcing" us to upgrade.

Assuming there is nothing in Vista which you consider to be an absolute 'must have', don't even consider upgrading the operating system. If your computer is performing OK and is stable there is little, apart from stress and grief, to be achieved by going along the upgrade route.

Upgrading to Vista is not as improtant as upgrading to Windows XP from Windows 98 was. I really like XP, and Vista looks cool, but the prices are unreal....$499 for ultimate....perhaps Microsoft shoudl learn from Google about NOT ripping off customers.

The hard drive in our old notebook blew out just before we went on vacation early Jan. I went to Circuit City tonight to buy a " special" Compaq with Vista for $449 after $130 in rebates. I was surprised to learn that most PCs they carry do not have the system restore disc included. CC would install "better" PC protection, clean off the junk that is preinstalled, and create restore discs for $150. PASSI just bought an off-lease Dell Latitude 600 off eBay for $437 with XP Professional with disc. That's the same PC I have at my corporate office.

Will there be a time, though, where it will become necessary to upgrade, as in when MS withdraws support for XP?

I get that it is not necessary now, and that there does seem to be more negatives to an upgrade...so thanks everyone for the feedback.

XP is likely to be supported for a number of years yet. You will probably be replacing your current PC before XP support is lost.
Another thing to bear in mind is that Vista requires 15gig of free space for installation. That won't be a problem for most desktop machines, but certainly can be a problem with laptops as they historically had much smaller hard drives. The laptop hard drives were also much more expensive to upgrade.
