Limiting a users bandwidth on a Home Network

I was reviewing past posts of mine and noticed this one.

It was buried in with many others and never received a response. I probably should know the answer myself but do not, so I'm asking it again here.

"What to do with the Son who wants to online game and share music, files etc, and opens up a port or two. He is getting smarter than his old man.

So far, no prob Bob.

Is there anything out there that I can use to limit him to a certain percentage of the bandwith.?"

I did a google search with your exact same question, then I come to some software site and bump to 2nd search for
"bandwidth shaper, bandwidth limiter or traffic shaper"

I guess my in-law may know how to use them and set them up. But I have no idea.

If he is hosting the information, then the computer or server that is doing the hosting should be able to monitor it's download. Form there, you simply need some type of utility to let guets know when bandwith use was exceeded.

I just purchased a server of my own but I have not had time to learn how to use it... It is far more complicated then using a normal PC and I am building an in-home intranet as opposed to a web server but I will bet I will do more with it in the future...

I dropped the network server setup (the two networkcards in one machine) setup when everone was sick of having to turn the PC on and Comcast didn't appear to care anymore how many computers you had. Now it is just the router and cable modem.

It would seem for the bandwidth shaper the network server setup is best.

Thankyou both, I think for now a chat with son#2 is in order and hopefully that is all that will be necessary. If not I've got a direction to look to.
