My father-in-law uses AVG and it has served him well.
Here is another free anti virus software. This works very well and I use it as an addition to my free Cox authentium software. A friend of mine used only Norton for some time and then used this and it found over 100 hidden trojans and viruses. He was amazed. I cross checked my computers and only found one minor trojan on my system that was not doing any harm but I removed it.

Same here, both the previous version and the new version.
My brother-in-law called me two or three months ago about their computer and a friends computer, which both had been running unprotected. Both were serious infected. Our old PC never has been, not since AVG.
It updates and scans every day. You can set the scan for a convenient time; default is 8:00 AM. Of course it will update when you are on the Internet. You can pause either and restart them.
