  • linksys troubles

First of al let me start off by saying that I am not very computer literate. I know how to surf the web and turn the computere off and on and that's about it. My dh is the smart one and he is gone until the weekend. We have linksys in our house so I can use the laptop where ever I'd like and not be tied to the desktop. A couple nights ago it was working fine and then about 20 minutes laters when I went to check something it could hook up. Can you tell me in simple words what I can do to try and get this working? TIA

    Try this.

    Turn off all computers.

Unplug the power to both the modem and the wireless router. Let off for a couple of minutes.

Plug in the modem first and let it come up.

Plus in the wireless router and let it come up.

Turn on your computer. If you are receiving a signal to your modem, this should refresh all of the signals and hopefully you will be able to connect to the internet.

    Good luck!

Mike gave you the correct procedure ~~ If you would have called Linksys ~~ they would have told you to do the samething ~~

One slight modification to Mike's last instruction.

When you start the computers back up, start up only one computer and let it complete the entire process of booting up, logging in, and connecting with the router. Either computer will work, but I suggest doing this with the desktop.

After the first computer is up and running normally, you can then start up the other computer(s).

If this is a recurring problem, you can try just shutting off the router and turning it back (after letting it sit unpowered for a couple of minutes) on to see if rebooting the router solves the problem. If rebooting the router doesn't work, reboot the modem the same way. If those steps don't work, then do the complete system reboot described above.

Ninety percent of the time rebooting the router and the modem will solve the problem and avoid needing to shut down and reboot everything.

BTW - these types of problems come and go for no reason I have been able to discern. Right now it has probably been four months since I've needed to do any rebooting because the system hung up. But when problems start happening system hangs are sometimes a daily occurrence. Those unstable times last for a week or two, then everythings stabilizes until the next episode.
