- Tri-Color cartridges are the most expensive reproduction method on the planet.
- NEW inkjet and laser machines normailly are only filled to 20% of advertised capacity.
- If you want a real mess, try re-inking your inkjets.
- If you want to ruin your printer, get your cartridges re-inked and re-filled.
- Most laser cartridges are only filled to approx 50% of capacity.
- There is a VAST difference in quality between reinked and refilled - remanufactured - remanufactured compatible and new.
- Printed with continuous forms with dot matrix printers is anywhere from 50% to 80% more cost efficient than inkjet and laser printing.
- There is an unbelievable markup in inkjet and laser cartridges - The largest possible savings are from machines manufactured by Brother, Canon and Epson.
- If I were to buy a laser printer it would be an HP.
- If I wanted junk, I would buy Lexmark and Dell.

I always re-ink until the cartridge fails. And yes it can sometimes be messy. But the multicolor hands clear up in about 24 hours.
When it's time to buy a new cartridge or cartridges, I sometimes find it cost effective just to buy a new printer and if it comes with 2 full size cartriges, it often is about the same price as buying the cartridges alone. I now have six ink jet printers.

I love Canon. Besides the fact that each color has its own ink tank, they print till the tank is stone out of ink. When I get the warning I buy a new cartridge, but I don't put it in. My printer will print up to a month longer, depending on what color it is. When it quits, there is no degredation of color on the last page it printed (HP and Epson used to be known for this). ANd it remembers where you were and continues to print in sequence once you do replace the cartridge.

Yes, I do exactly as you Fern. I ignore the "ink out" warning and always get at least another month out of it. I once bought a generic brand (at half the price of the genuine Canon cartridge) and it lasted approx 1/4 as long as the genuine brand.

"I once bought a generic brand" There are apples and there are oranges - there are junk generic and there is great generic. If you paid 1/2 price, you paid too much. If you received 1/4 usage, you bought junk generic. If you want photo quality in Canon, buy Canon products. If you do not want picture quality, buy generic except for PIXMA.

For general work compatibles, re-inked, remans might all work perfectly acceptably. That is unlikely when you need accurate colour matching for photo production. I'm not saying it can't happen, just that it rarely does.
