  • Why isn't my laptop working?

    My VOIP modem died yesterday.

    Moved connections back to my DSL Modem. The desktop is running off a hard-wire connection to the wireless router, My laptop is showing connection but every time I go to the internet is showing the ultra-annoying Page cannot be displayed. This happens even if I hard wire into the router.

    Maybe a dumb blonde episode but HELP! DS doesn't like to share.

    Verizon FIOS appointment scheduled for Tuesday. I won't make it that long.

    Tuesday....What's wrong with Monday?

        There is computer expert on TUGS that you could pose this same question to and I beleive you will rec'd an answer.

          Lawren,
          First go to "Device Manager". You can get there several ways. One way is to go to Control Panel under START menu, then pick SYSTEM, and under SYSTEM pick Device Manager.
          Find Network Connections under Device Manager and see if there are any of those little yellow triangles next to your network connections. (the little yellow triangles mean that there is a problem with that device and it is not working properly, most of the time a driver problem)If there are you will have to uninstall and reinstall the network connection. Really pretty easy especially if you are runnin XP. You need to delete the connection and it will find new hardware when you reboot.

            I uninstalled the wireless card and reinstalled it. Still no dice.

            Makes me crazy to see the internet connection is there and I can't get to it....

            Grrrrrrrrrrr.

              Soundlike you have Verizon. We called Verizon with a similar problem and they sent us a new wireless modem out to us in within 24 hours.

              Do you own a Dell computer? I would call Dell asap!!

                sounds like there maybe "trouble" with DHCP assignments from the router

                with conflicting tcp/ip assignments, you can often see an internet connection, but when you go out to the net you are in conflict and thus get that error message

                you could try to set the tcp/ip for the laptop manually ....you usually find this place by going to network in control panel and then chossing the tcp/ip settings....but you need to know what to put there ....you could get an idea by looking at the "address assigned to your desktop", the laptop would have to have a number in the same domain as your desktop.....the mask is usually 255.255.255.0

                eg desktop is 192.168.0.100

                you could then assign the laptop manually something like 192.168.0.105

                it once took me a month and a half to figure out the neighbours inability to connect using a router dsl modem and laptop ....the solution that time was to use the "router" to login (PPPOE) onto the internet instead of using the login procedure that came from the service provider,,,it was all due to conflicts ....both the router and the dsl modem were trying to assign addresses

                  My current service provider is AT&T <they suck> I am getting Verizon Tuesday. Yeah Like I need this headache right before I leave for England. The desktop is a Dell and it's just rocking along like the workhorse it is. The laptop is an older IBM Thinkpad which I use mainly for here and e-mail etc.

                  I'm sorry my replies are spotty but DS is very stingy when it comes to sharing "his" computer. When does school start again?

                    I apologize in advance if this is a dumb question, but since you didn't say ....

                    Have you completely shut down your entire system, including modem, routers, computers, and printers, then rebooted in the following sequence (allowing each component to fully restore operation before starting the next device):

                    1. Modem

                    2. Router

                    3. One computer at a time (allowing Windows and all startup programs to fully install)

                    4. Any network printers.

                    5. All printers attached to a computer.
                    “Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

                    “This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

                    “You shouldn't wear that body.”

                      Steve you are right to ask; but as an old time network person who has learned to check and see if things are "plugged in". :LOL: Yes I have hard started the entire sequence more than once. Especially when the VOIP centillium modem crapped out.

                      I may be blonde but I'm not THAT dumb. :P

                        One stab in the dark here.

                        A couple of months ago I got a friends new router set up after they went to cable modem (Comcast). They couldn't get the router to work, and after four hours on-line with Comcast support, it still wasn't working.

                        The problem was in the router setup. If the computer was connected directly to the modem, everything was fine. Then the router was added to the setup, with the computer used to do the setup connected to the router using the LAN connection. As soon as that change was made, internet connectivity was lost. The router could be addressed, but nothing was moving past the router.

                        I started drilling in, and eventually located a feature I had never seen before in any of my router setups. My memory is a bit sketchy now, but it was a numeric address (xxx.xxx.xxx.x) that was needed to be input - the setup instructions said that this needed to be the address of the computer being used to do the setup. It was confusing because there was an external address entered that had been provided (i.e., not a 192.168.xxx.x address ) by Comcast, and, IIRC, that address was also the default address in the router created during the installation process.

                        I guessed that maybe I needed to override the setup program and change that setting to the local address for the computer I was sitting at instead of of the address supplied by the setup routine.

                        Bingo!!! It was clearly a poorly written router setup program - I ca see no reason for the setup program to not install the correct value in that location - compounded with Comcast technical support being unfamiliar with this problem in the router they supplied as part of the subscription.

                        Anyway, you might want to rummage around in your router settings for something similar.
