  • Another Need Advice For a New Computer

DW wants a laptop, something not left over from the last century.

It will be for business and personal use. She wants to have a printer and scanner.

    Anything here look OK?

eBay – Computers Networking, Apple Macintosh Computers and Desktop PC Components items on eBay.com. Find IT on eBay.

Any recommendations of what to look for, or look out for?

    TIA

Buy new and look for deals on Dell, HP or other brands on eDealinfo: Hot Deals - Coupon Codes Rebates Black Friday Thanksgiving Christmas Halloween Gift Sale. I just bought a HP LT and got 30% a customized lT at HP.

You can pick up a printer/scanner as an all-in-one for as little as $ 30, so that's not a major concern. I would have her try some (laptops) out at a store, if for no other reason, to determine how small a screen she can accept. I have a 15.4 " screen and find it a bit too small- so next time I'll pony up another couple of hundred for the bigger 17" screen. For faster processing, you might want to go with a dual core processor and at least 1 GB of RAM memory- or 2 or more if you get a Vista operating system. Thanks.

It looks like she has been looking into a Dell Latitude D600. Any thoughts about it?

That's what I have used for 4 years as my work laptop at Caterpillar, and I bought a used one on eBay for personal use. They are workhorses! However, you can buy other brands new for just a few dollars more, but you get stuck with Vista.

I am using Vista now and believe it or not. I like it better than XP Pro.

yes, Jim I agree with others buy new, there are lots of good deals out there. You never know with a used one you could get a good deal but you could also be buying someone else's nightmare.
Also I agree with Frank about Vista. Although I don't have it up on any of my home computers yet I have done some work on other folks PC's that are running it and so far am pretty impressed. I think this could be the most stable operating syste that MS has produced so far.
Dell is having some good deals and as others have said the 600 is a workhouse. I have always had good luck dealing with Dell so far.

The latitudes are the better of the Dell laptops, but I don't think they have anything bigger than a 15.4" screen and the same goes for Lenovo.
It appears that Vista is beginning to get the fixes needed to make it more user friendly, but I'm not sure if it is as compatible with software as is XP.

I got down to the wireless router option on the link Tony sent.

Can your neighbors use your internet service if you have a wireless router?

Is that a stupid question [I'm too uninformed (not uniformed) to know?]

During the wireless setup, you can enter a security "key." The neighbors can see your network, but can't get into it without your key code.

                        JLB,

Are you trying to figure out how to use your neighbor's wireless signal?

Well, Son, DW remembered one of those neighbors saying he wished we would get wireless so he would have Internet access.
