I did go ahead and purchase on of these and have had it working about a week so far. It is not cheap, but there is no monthly charge. I like it better than Skype - I could use Skype OK, but my wife never would try it.
Can you port your existing number to this service?
I don't think that you can, you can get a number number - check on their site on what area codes and prefixes are available. You can also, reduce your local service to the bare minimum and piggy back on it.
