  • Dial Up Speeds

If I have internet phone service and still us dial up, is there anyway to speed up the connection? I assume the limiting factor is the speed of the modeum, correct?

My daughter has an internet phone service and would like to have faster internet, but doesn't want to pay the cost of cable internet.

Doesn't internet phone service require DSL? You would use a modem for both and a secondary offt aht for the VOIP. So internet would be at DSL speeds.

I'm confused -- you need high-speed internet access to have internet phone service. Are you saying that your daughter somehow has internet phone w/o the high-speed internet? Is that just a product bundling that her cable company provides?

As for the modem access, if it works over the internet phone service (not sure if it would), the speed would be limited to the modem speed.

Charter has a phone, internet and TV service and she has only purchased the TV and phone portions from them. I guess it isn't internet phone, just cable phone.

          Different animal.

Current NY cable offerings are all 3 for +/- $100/month for a one year term. A good price.

She may want to look into what the local phone company is offering as well IF she isn't in the middle of a term agreement with Charter.

            Warning-Very Generalized Information follows:

In a lot of cases, what is required is a 'box' that will connect to the computer and to the 'phone system' (cable, VoIP, whatever it may be). That box will allow access to the internet. The company will need to set up an IP address. Email address may change. Costs for service with the company will change. Other magic happens and poof, you have faster internet commection.

This requires that the company even has the internet features based on the connections to the house. There are a lot of 'what if' or 'in this case' that I have not covered, but a phone call to the company should answer a lot of questions.

I went from dial-up with accelerator to basic AT&T DSL and the difference was incredible. If you can get it for $ 14.99/mo. in your neck of the woods-go for it.
