can't disconnect from internet

I have dial up thru Juno, 4 year old computer using Internet Explorer. Of coiurse it is slow, and sometimes when i click on a link, it will freeze up, but this new problem is a doozy.

I click on disconnect, but it does not disconnect. I picked up the phone about two hours after I got off the computer to discover I was still on line. The past several times I have had to physically pull the phone plug out of the wall. then the Juno option line is still on my computer. I do occasionally get a program not responding box which says something aobut JunoApps. I emailed Juno about downloading new software. I am hoping it is that and not a virus. I tried to download a free virus scan, it said it would take 4 to 5 minutes. about an hour later, I pulled the plug.

I have no solution...as I too have this issue occassionally. In fact, right now, I've had an open line for several days! Everything was fine and normal, then BOOM! Problems.

I am looking forward to what the experts say!

Could be a virus or a worm. The malware takes control of your winsock and won't allow a disconnect because it's programmed to keep you on line.

Suggestion: Turned off your router and disconnted the phone line from the router. Wait for about three minutes. Next plug the telephone line back into the router and turn the router back on. What happen.

There is no router. They're on dial-up.

The OP did that. The phone line disconnected but the computer apparently thought it was connected.

In the days when dial-up was common, viruses and worms either modified or replaced the winsock and took control of the dial-up connection. That's why that is my first suspicion.

It's been so long since I was involved with dial-up that I'm not quite sure how to proceed after doing a virus scan. Reinstalling Windows would work but that's a drastic step.

go to Antivirus, anti-spyware, anti-spam, firewall. Protect yourself with Panda Security and use there free online scanner. They have a removel tool in case you need it.

Which further supports the notion that you have an infection. Worms and viruses are commonly programmed to nullify attempts to run virus detection or removal programs.

At this point, your best option is probably to back up files on an external drive, then do a fresh installation of Windows from your Windows reinstallation disk. There's a thread either here or at TUG within the last month on doing backups and file transfer.

at 4;15 I was able to start downloading the Panda Active Scan. It downloaded at 6:52. Now I am to click on what I want to scan and I get the error on page message. I give up!

Don't give up, close it out and start again, This time it may work.

Unplug your puter for five minutes than plug it back-in, do the same with your phone &/or router ifin you have one.

If it stoped then run the virus scan now.
