  • Spybot?

I've had Spybot for awhile, a couple versions now. When I first got it, I had some crap that it got rid of, but that was a long time ago.

I haven't had any problems since. Do you think that is because it or my AVG or Zonealarm kept problems from getting in? Or?

Now an updated version of Spybot is available. Should I?

Knocking on the simulated wood of my computer cabinet, my old POC has done amazingly well with the stuff that a lot of people have problems with.

I love Nortan Security Suite and I count on it to help keep my PCs clean... You can get infected from anything it seems... E-mails, websites, or even the stupid banner ads or pop-ups on some sites. The only defence you really have is some type of software that watches for it and cleans it when it is found.

Now we differ, I hate Norton IMO it is the worst piece of junk out there. It Trys to take over your computer, I had a free 15 month subscription when I bought one of my computers and I removed Norton.

Which is worst Aol or Norton, The world may never know.

I use Norton Security but I find it uses a lot of memory when it runs a scan. I also use Spy Sweeper which is very good also and doesn't use hardly any memory when it runs when there are other programs open.

Last year, I had terrible problems with virus infections whilst using Norton. I was advised by 2 different technicians to discontinue using Norton and switch to AVG. The first technicians comments on Norton were "it is .... " (well, I won't go into the exact language) but the second technician put it rather more succinctly "Norton has been unable to maintain their high standards". Since installing AVG 7.5 Anti-Malware, Spybot, SUPERAntiSpyware and ZoneAlarm I have not had any problems.

I spent some time on the Computer forums when I had the virus problems and was "adopted" by a very kind man who has continued to provide me with information. His last email to me dated 4 Feb 08 reads:

"All the indications are that the malware threat is going to get (and is getting) significantly worse during 2008, so it's really important to keep checking that everything is updated frequently (not forgetting to immunise and update the hosts file regularly using Spybot, and also to keep updating SpyWare Blaster, because these are front line defences). Spybot has upgraded from version 1.4 to 1.5 but there seem to be some teething problems with the new version so I'm staying with 1.4 for now."

          Hope this helps.

I had Norton and got rid of it a few years ago and have been using BitDefender Professional version v10. BitDefender was the highest rated of all security software by professional reviewers and Consumer Reports.

I have also used Spybot for several years. I scan with SpyBot every time after I finish my daily computer session. I access a lot of web sites as I belong to many different organizations. SpyBot always finds some spyware every time I do a scan even though I have real-time protection. I have upgraded Spybot many times.

              D. Al of the above.

              I have used Pop-up Stopper for years and it . . . stops Pop-ups.

Had NAV for years, and did the updates. When NAV05 came out you had to switch to it . . . nor more updating old stuff. (Also have AOL ) The switch to NAV05 was problematic, as I recall because the previous NAV did not fully uninstall. I finally got a really helpful Indian gal on the phone who stepped me through the total uninstall of both versions.

Then I put in the free Grisoft AVG, which I have since updated to a subsequent version.

When I first installed spybot, and ran it, of course it found all kinds of crap, one that it could npt remove. But there was a special application out there to get rid of that item. Yeah, I used to run it frequently, to see all the stuff that you pick up from your daily surfing, mostly advertising and tracking cookies. Now I delete cookies whenever old POC gets sluggish. I also go into Safe Mode and defrag.

I have AOL set on medium, so unless it recognizes a sender, I have to approve emails. If I don't recognize a sender, I delete it without opening.

I hear about others who have so many problems and I am grateful not to have them.

Well, DW's new Dell Vostro arrived the other day, so now we get to start this all over again.
