  • Need help getting PC to fire up quicker

    My PC is taking as much as 6 minutes till I can go on-line. I never wished to take the time to do anything about it till my tractor forced me to lay low for awhile.

    I did a: Start, Run, MSConfig, Start Tab and got this list. All 26 were check-marked. I don't think all of these need to be started up when the PC fires up. I un-checked the ones I indicate in Blue with no ill effects (that I can tell). I don't see where it fires up much faster.

    How does one know what all is needed at Start? Do you suggest any of the rest be un-checked?

    install
    tgcmd
    hpgs2wnd
    realsched
    bsd
    sscRun
    oasclnt
    mcvsescn
    MPfTray
    lxcimon
    ezprint
    apdproxy
    AOL
    jusched
    McciTrayApp
    WkDetect
    ctfmon
    aro
    spywareBot
    qttask
    Reader_sl
    MoneyExpress
    Google Toolbar Notifier
    AOL DIAL
    AOL Software
    Port AOL
    KodakEasyShares

    I am not a computer expert, but would like to know additional information.
    Are you using AOL? If not, getting rid of that may fix a lot of your problems.

    I googled the other names and found:
    hpgs2wnd=Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-web software
    realsched=part of RealPlayer from RealNetworks
    bsd=Unix stuff, not sure, but try freebsd.org
    sscRun=a AOL Safety and Security Cente Install Helper
    oasclnt=oasclnt process info for McAfee VirusScan Module
    mcvsescn=McAfee Email Scanner
    MPfTray=process info for McAfee Personal Firewall Tray
    lxcimon=software from Lexmark International. You have a lexmark printer?
    ezprint=printing software
    apdproxy=process info for Adobe Photoshop Album
    AOL
    jusched=un Microsystem's Java suite and checks for Java updates
    McciTrayApp=Verizon file
    WkDetect=MS required software
    ctfmon=provides text input service support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard
    aro=not sure on this one
    spywareBot
    qttask=Apple QuickTime
    Reader_sl=Adobe Reader Speed Launch
    MoneyExpress=not sure what that is, but unless you are doing things with them often, I would get rid of it.
    Google Toolbar Notifier
    AOL DIAL
    AOL Software
    Port AOL
    KodakEasyShares

    Do you have a Kodak camera that you hook up to the computer?
    Google toolbar is not needed.

    All are based on google research, or my opionion. Someone else may chime in with a more extensive computer background.

      I would start with a disk clean-up then disk defragmentation. If that doesn't make of a difference, go here for windows check-ups and tune-ups:

          Still takes over 5 minutes.

          Thanks. Really appreciate your efforts.

          Have run Ad-Aware and got rid of many adverse things that made jumping around on-line pretty slow. I'm pretty happy with that.

          Have done Clean Disk & Defrag several times.

          Now I'm trying to speed up the time from Log On to when I can go On-Line.

          I have unchecked these blue items:

          apdproxy = Adobe Photoshop
          realsched = Don't need RealPlayer at Startup
          spywareBot = Don't figure I need this at Startup
          qttask = Apple QuickTime. What is it. I turned it off.
          Reader_sl = Adobe Reader Speed Launch
          MoneyExpress = Don't use
          Google Toolbar Notifier = I unchecked. What is it ??? .
          AOL DIAL = I have DSL
          AOL Software = Don't need at Startup
          Port AOL = Don't need at Startup
          KodakEasyShares = Grandaughter needs, but not at Startup
          sscRun = AOL Security install helper
          hpgs2wnd = Do I need HP's share-to-web running on EMACHINE.?
          ctfmon = input service support for keyboard
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------
          oasclnt = info for McAfee. I left it on.

          mcvsescn = McAfee Email Scanner. I left it on.
          MPfTray = McAfee Firewall Tray. I left it on.
          lxcimon = Printer I left it on. Do I need at Startup???
          ezprint = Printer I left it on. Do I need at Startup???
          AOL = I left it on. I uncheck, but it comes back at reboot.
          McciTrayApp = Verizon file. Left on, but do I need at Startup??
          WkDetect = MS required. Left on, but do I need at Startup??
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------

          jusched = to do with Java suite. Do I need this at Startup????
          aro
          = Don't know what it is. Appeared today for first time. ????
          install = ???? What is it ???
          tgcmd = ???? What is it ???
          bsd = Unix stuff, will have to ck further. ????

          -----------------------------------------------

          Still takes over 5 minutes. Any other suggestions?

              I just asked because I am never comfortable with the 'let us check your computer for you, it is free' since many will add spyware. I know what you listed is Microsoft, so should be more trusted. Just that after looking that their front page before getting to the Agree Disagree button, I figured that was too much for last night.

                Okay, not a lot of time this morning, and I still hope someone with a good computer background comes in to confirm or correct my suggestions. You may need to consult a Geek Squad agent or do some reading. I am afraid you are going to uncheck or delete something that may cause more problems than a slow start.

                Somethings like a spybot may need to be on your start list to run in the background. If it doesn't start, you may get spyware. Your printer program should stay on the list. I figure if it MS stuff, it is probably best left on unless you have researched and found you don't need it. If your DSL is Verison, leave it checked.

                If you have a program on your computer that you KNOW you do not need, you should go to Start, Control Panel, 'Add or Remove Programs'. Find that program and remove it.

                Google sometimes adds things they think will help you. When it may help me, it may not you and you can get rid of it. If you are not using AOL, remove it also. Same for MoneyExpress.

                I don't know what you need and what you do not need as I don't know what you use. If you use quicktime video player to see some videos, leave it on. If you download a lot of stuff, programs, icons, screen savers, etc, you get into trouble with add-ons.

                My wife, very nice lady, two masters degrees and not a logical bone in her body. She will screw up a computer faster than anyone I know. Back up your computer before going any further just in case you screw something up. Consult a computer pro. It may be money well spent.

                  Well, I did all those things.

                  That Windows Live thing found 35 MB of temp files and 1070 registry items.

                  I'll see if it makes any dif. for a couple of days.

                  Thanks.
