Wireless N vs. wireless G

I currently use a wireless G router. Would I see a significant improvement in the distance I could move if I replaced my router with a wireless N? Would I need to upgrade the two laptops to "N" capability to see any benefit?

Yes. "N" only gives full benefit if both sides are at that level. If your laptops have built in wireless it may not be upgradeable and you'd have to go the PCCard route to accomplish this.

What I was told when I bought ours was, the N router will improve the distance and the strength of the stream over that distance compared to a G router. However, your computer would need to have N capability to take full advantage of the faster data stream feed. So you will get some distance advantage with the N router even if you have G capability in your computer.

Even if you still have G the N router will give you more distance and improve your conection. As you replace your computers at least you will have the N router in place for the upgrade.

Thanks for the information. Kept me from running out & wasting $$ on a router because I don't want to spend money to update the laptops too. If I could get by with $70-100 for the router only it was viable. If I upgrade the laptops, I would have to pay someone to do it too.

Someone here mentioned recently that your router, if you have one, should be placed high up, like on top of a bookcase, hutch, etc. I placed my router on the top of the computer hutch...the computer is on the floor, and also away from the telephone. It works much better than when it was on the floor next to the computer.

Got a question about n vs g. Right now, have no problems with connections between the wireless router upstairs and the 2 puters down in basement. ISP is comcast. Will n really give me faster downloads and uploads? I just checked speed and download now is 4367 kb/s and upload is 1785.

It is not unusual for me to get between 14000 and 15000 kb/s for download with an increase in upload also.

Jellyfish.com has my D Link router up right now starting price is $125.49 shipped but the price should go down to half of that.
