virus/$scam

a friend just got a 'virus'.
an announcement came on his screen saying:
ALERT! virus detected on your computer, must install anti virus program.
he figured it best not to click on anything, his computer the froze up.

he is a novice, he had no protection(and is sorry now). the computer is being looked at(best buy) so far they are saying he has lost everything.
I don't know the facts but it sounds serious.

anyone have any like situtations? they say it is an overseas scam/spyware trying to get you to buy software to fix it.

Smitfraud. They want $69 for the software that just makes things worse. His data should be recoverable but his Windows/programs may be hosed beyond repair.

the end of the story is lacking information. my friend didn't really 'get'
what happened. he bought trend micro antispyware but it wouldn't load(due to the virus I think). so he took it to best buy,where he had bought the program, and they had trouble getting it in also. but he got it fixed and running "like new"-for $300. that turned into a whole story of its own!!
he has been wishing he'd been protected but figure nothing would happen to him.
