Upgrading memory cards

Just updated BIOS Version/Date Dell Computer Corporation AO3 to A05,
Don't know what advantage that gives? ?????????

Thinking of increasing Total Physical Memory to 1 GB. Do you see any problem? Does SMBIOS Version 2.3 have any limiting effect on increasing to 1 GB?

My understanding is that windows XP will run best if it has between 512 & 1 gig of memory. You currently have 256.

Adding memory up to 2GB on older computer (and new ones for that matter) is probably the best bang for your buck in terms of speed improvements.

By all means, add the extra memory. You can either do it yourself, (look up what type of memory your computer needs--go to Crucial, there you can scan your computer for recommended upgrades and/or follow the step 1,2,3 drop down menus to find the correct memory modules) or bring it to someone like best buy's geek squad. Your choice.

Once you've found the module type you can either buy it directly from crucial or check the net for competitive pricing. Some places to check are Newegg or TigerDirect

Some older computers are limited in how much memory they will accept, physically (slots) or just how much memory the computer can handle. Some older computers are limited to a max of 512MB for really old computers, 1GB, or up to a max of 4GB. If anyone plans to do an update of memory, it would be a good idea to review the computer's specs to see what the memory limitation is for that model.
