    Welcome To Computer Help Forum!

    My used ID is JWC which are my initials for John Cummings. I am one of the the Moderators of the Computer Help forum.

    I own my own business as a computer systems software design consultant and system integrator. I have been designing computer hardware/software/systems for 40 years and have been an independent consultant for 15.

    Bear in mind that some of you probably know more than I do about some of the user issues. Don't be afraid to jump in and answer the question if you can. Designing and implementing computer systems does not necessarily make me an expert user though I obviously have a lot of experience at that. However, I will try my best to answer all questions. If I don't know, I will find the answer.

    Please don't post specific computer questions or comments in this "Welcome....." thread. People will be more likely to read them if they go in their own thread.

    Upgrading Videos graphics card?

    Hi, John,
    My husband wants to upgrade his video graphics card on his HP Pavilion 510c.

    He wants to have a DVI monitor, and the pavilion doesn't have the capability.

    We researched and believe all it takes is getting a PCI card with the DVI capability. We believe we have to disable the integrated graphics that is on the motherboard at time of install, to make the upgrade possible.

    Question: Would you have any recommendations for what type of pci card to buy? Thanks.

      I don't have an answer for you off the top of my head. I will research it and see what I can come up with. I would be concerned about compatibility. Meanwhile, if anybody else has any suggestions, feel free to post them.

          As far as specs...

          According to the specs, no AGP slot, so we figure we need to get the PCI card.

            You are right, there is no AGP slot. However, that is no problem as there are many DVI Video cards for PCI.

            Here is what I have come up with. Installation should be pretty easy. I assume you are running Windows XP. It is pretty well like you said.

            1. Disable the on-board video.
            2. Install the DVI Video card in a PCI slot.
            3. Plug in the monitor to the DVI connector on the video card.
            4. Startup your computer and the new video card should be detected by plug and play.
            5. Install new driver if necessary.

            I do not have DVI video so I do not have personal experience to advise you which is the best DVI Video card to buy. Check out the following links to get user reviews and prices for the video card.

            I have not run across any mention of compatibility problems with the DVI video.
